Fight On & Goodbye for Now

This post has been a long time coming. I've avoided writing it and procrastinated until I knew it would be written as something official and more set in stone. I didn't want to say goodbye only to turn around and have it be less final and more awkward.

For those of you who don't know, I was recently hired and have started working as an on-air reporter with WILX-TV in Lansing, MI. The last couple of weeks have been crazy in that I've essentially moved my entire life from Southern California out here in the span of a few days. The reality is still sinking in, but it's a thrill to actually be getting paid to work as a journalist.

But if there's one thing I'm going to miss about USC and my college experience more than anything, it's my time covering and being a part of this team.

When I first came to USC from Santa Fe, I wasn't sure what to expect from the organization. I fired off an email to the general team address to the effect of: I'd like to do play-by-play, public address or whatever you need.

It didn't take long for that email to turn into a 4-year labor of love (hopefully mutual) between myself and the team. I've enjoyed calling the games, even when they started at 11:45 at night or required a multi-state bus trip to get to. Every rush-hour trip to Anaheim Ice was worth it, no exceptions. I witnessed the slow collapse of the program followed by the amazing speed in which the team successfully rebuilt itself into champions. USC Football could learn a lot from this team... especially about fighting on through adversity that's out of your hands.

The primary reason for this post isn't just to say goodbye but also to say thanks, and there's plenty of people deserving of gratitude.

There's no better group to start with than the parents. Without you, there would be no point to broadcasting the games because nobody would care to listen. You are the true superfans of this team and meeting and speaking with you either through the forums or in person was one of the great perks of my job. To the Ernsts, thank you for all of the great pictures! They added so much to the blog over the last season. To Tom Gawlik, thank you for being the most active message board contributor. It always helped to see physical evidence that someone was listening. To the one and only Dante Sr., thank you for your dedication. It was always a pleasure to see you either at home games or on the road. To the Lewis's, thank you for providing pictures for my words. Jeff, it was always a pleasure looking at replays of controversial plays. To the McClanathans, thank you for being my pseudo-parents and making home games that much better with your enthusiasm. Special thanks to Elaine for trying to set me up on a date. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but hopefully this gives everyone a sense of how wonderful this group was.

Of course there are the players to thank. There's no better place to start than everyone on last year's roster, if only because they sent me and the other seniors out on the highest note there is. I still can't believe you guys hung a banner this year. Simply unbelievable. To Butters (aka Max Szentveri), thanks for always providing material for epic stories (in Seattle, Colorado, China... you don't need specifics I'm sure). To Dante Caravaggio, thanks for always caring and bringing passion to the ice every night. You are one of the fiercest competitors out there and that's exactly how it should be. To Clark McClanathan, thank you for being the heart and soul of the team. Your love of the game was evident in how you played and there's a reason I was always a little biased. To Jonathan Stallsmith, thanks for being one of the hardest workers I've ever known. Riding to Anaheim with you and Foley arguing about, well, everything, made every trip a breeze. To the team as a whole, thanks for treating me as part of the squad even though I never wore a jersey on my back. It truly meant a lot.

The other staff members were also a joy to work with. To Mike Locke, thanks for giving the stadium your booming voice. It wouldn't sound right in Anaheim Ice without you behind the mic. To Nicole Vierzba, thanks for making sure every event was worth attending. To Johnny Nguyen, thanks for going above and beyond to take this team to the next level. The effort looks like it's paying off and I'm just sad I won't be around to see all of the great changes you're bringing to the program. To Cindy Bailey, thanks for being both a lifesaver. I don't think I could've made it through the whole eye situation without you. To Coach Jeff Langille, thanks for everything and I can't wait to see how you'll take the team to new heights. To Mark Wilbur, thanks for being a great interviewee and a better friend. I can't tell you how much your support of myself and the broadcast meant over the years. I appreciate that you were always honest and up front about the team and never hid behind the typical clichéd quotes coaches always use to avoid being interesting. It was a pleasure getting to know you and your wonderful family. I'm going to miss the swagger you brought to the bench and the winning attitude you instilled in the team night after night. You are a big part of what makes USC Ice Hockey so special and I hope you never leave the program behind.

Finally, I have to thank the two broadcasters I worked with predominantly during my time at USC. To Andrew Samel, thanks for shouldering the driving load, even if it meant getting us lost sometimes. To Dave Foley, thanks for being a great mentor and friend to me. I would've loved nothing more than to hear your call of the championship winning goal. It was a true pleasure doing games with you and I enjoyed our on-air chemistry. I can't wait to hear clips of you calling hockey in Atlanta. That city won't know what hit it. You're the man and I'm looking forward to the day when you get called up to the NHL.

If I left anyone out, I'm sorry.

I have loved my time during these last four seasons broadcasting and writing about this team. It's been a true joy. My only regret is that I didn't leave with a successor in place. My fondest hope is that someone steps in and continues calling the games. I wish I could address the future of this blog and the broadcast, but I'm honestly in the dark at this point. I'm a little ashamed to leave things in that state. Hopefully someone grabs the torch. They'll have the time of their lives. I know that because I did.

Thanks again to this program. I can't repeat enough how great it was being a part of this organization and I will be following along as the team defends their title.

End of an Era: Mark Wilbur Resigns After 17 Years as Head Coach

Eight championships. Twelve Crosstown Cups. That is the measurable impact of the Mark Wilbur era.

Swagger. A winning culture. International exposure. That is the immeasurable, but undeniable, impact Mark Wilbur has had on this program.

Wilbur made the announcement Wednesday that he was resigning as head coach before an assembled group of players at the team's house. He cited mostly family reasons for the move. Wilbur has two daughters, one of whom is entering high school. Also leaving his position is assistant coach Manny Ramirez. He and Coach Wilbur are, according to Ramirez, a package deal.

Although Wilbur is stepping down, he is not stepping out. Wilbur is moving from behind the bench as coach to the stands as the team's new general manager. That means things like travel arrangements, arena deals, equipment deals and recruiting are not in jeopardy going forward. Wilbur said he was excited about the opportunity to advance the organization in areas he didn't have time for previously.

Wilbur's likely replacement is Assistant Coach Jeff Langille. In addition to having three years experience on Wilbur's staff, Langille was the top goaltender for two championship teams (2002 and 2003). Not surprisingly given his background, Langille coached the defense. He was also the acting head coach for a good chunk of the regular season contests this past season, including the ASU road trip that sparked a turnaround last semester.

BREAKING NEWS: Champion's Cup Finally Returned to USC

The Cup was mailed to Coach Mark Wilbur. It came with no note and no apology. Still no comment from or communication with Oregon themselves. At least the trophy is with its rightful holders now.

University of Oregon Out of Class; Ducks Nesting on USC's PAC 8 Hockey Championship Trophy

Breach of tradition and sportsmanship mar underdog victory of USC Trojan Hockey victory of 2010 PAC 8 Hockey Tournament

LOS ANGELES (February 26, 2010) -In a breach of conduct, tradition, and sportsmanship, the University of Oregon has failed to give the perpetual PAC 8 Hockey "Championship Cup" to the current title holders, the University of Southern California (USC).

Fifth-ranked USC came from an underdog position in the tournament to defeat #4 UCLA (preliminary game), then #1 University of Oregon (semi-final), and #2 University of Washington (championship game) and capture the PAC 8 Championship February 20.

The University of Oregon had dominated the PAC 8 this season winning 14 of its 16 league games and had won the PAC 8 tournament the previous two years. USC Head Coach Mark Wilbur commented on the lack of a cup at last week's awards presentation, " The absence of sportsmanship in a sport that cherishes its traditions leaves me speechless. It hurts the students, players, the fans, UO, and the league."

The University of Oregon has not issued any communication to USC or the PAC 8 league to inform them of when they should expect the trophy delivered to the winners, nor an apology for failing to bring the perpetual cup to last week's tournament. Wilbur noted the lack of accountability and leadership from the University of Oregon Duck team, "It's pathetic...grow up and face the classless act and apologize publicly to the league and the team. Forget our seven previous championships - for this year's team, it's their first! I never thought I would witness such a class-less act at this level."

USC's last tournament win was in 2007. For many of their players, this was their first championship victory.

When asked what the team would do when the trophy arrives, coach Wilbur said, "What else, throw another victory party! Maybe we should thank them for giving cause to celebrate again. But, that doesn't replace that moment stolen from my players and our fans."

The King Has Returned: USC Comes Back to Win 8th Pac-8 Title 5-4 Over Washington

Hey everyone,

To tell the story of USC Ice Hockey this season, some numbers matter and some numbers simply do not. Numbers that don't matter: 9-19 (regular season record), 5-8 (Pac-8 record), 6-4 (score of Crosstown Cup Game #5), #5 (USC's seed in the Pac-8 tournament), and 4 (the losing streak the Trojans entered the tournament on). Numbers that do matter: 3-0 (Pac-8 tournament record), 12.6 (seconds remaining when the championship was won), 21 (Ryder Fyrwald's number), 5-4 (the final score), and 8 (Pac-8 championships in 15 years it's been awarded). Before the game, Coach Wilbur told his team: "Those banners on the wall aren't yours. If you want a damn banner, go out and get one." Here's how they did just that:

Period 1

The one flaw of this weekend has been the first period for the Trojans. UCLA and Oregon both drew first blood around 3 and a half minutes into the game. This one was no different. The Huskies David Schulman sent a low slap shot from the blue line on net. It deflected off of Schauffhausen and slid between goaltender Phil Adams legs and just across the line. Not a great goal to allow. But the Trojans answered back with a familiar face doing the damage. Alex Lofthus grabbed the puck from a corner scrum and circled into a scoring position at the inside edge of the left faceoff circle. His first try was blocked, but the second one was on goal. Washington goaltender Danny Dougan kept it out, but parked on the doorstep was Ryder Fyrwald. The goal was Fyrwald's 6th goal of the tournament (officially 4th), and tied the game. The Huskies were unfazed despite a bit of lackluster play overall by their squad. Daniel Carson held the puck at the near point and fired at goal. Jordan Chernesky was sitting just off of the paint by the near post and sent a perfect redirection past Adams. A dagger of a goal came in the late stages of the 1st. Dan Herda muscled his way down the right wing boards and into the corner with Justin O'Neill draped all over him. Herda won the battle and passed it to All-Pac-8 forward Corey James. A one-timed slapshot later, and the Huskies doubled their lead to 3-1 with just 3.7 seconds remaining in the period.

Period 2

But USC had outplayed the Huskies in the first, they had only a two-goal deficit to show for it. Washington stepped up their game a bit in the second, but the Trojans didn't let their foot off of the accelerator. As the period wound down, Nick Helmer and Noah Comisar almost used that momentum and crowd to their advantage. They broke in 2-on-1. Helmer passed it backdoor for Comisar. The Texas product had an empty net to shoot at, but his one-time try clanged the crossbar, came straight down and bounced out. USC was undeterred. After an aggressive try to jar the puck loose following another Dougan save, Clark McClanathan and Bryce Johnson received matching minors. McClanathan demanded noise from the crowd with emphatic hand motions and it came from the packed pro-USC crowd. A "U-S-C, U-S-C" chant filled the building and the energy lifted the Trojan bench. USC's bench stood as a unit for the remainder of the game, the Huskies bench was quiet and reserved. You'd have never known that Washington had a 2-goal advantage. They had a look on their face like something bad was about to happen. Following a monumental penalty, something bad did happen to the Huskies on the 4-on-3. USC sent out 3 forwards and a defenseman with a late change. It paid immediate dividends. The draw was won back and passed to Fyrwald. The forward found Helmer with a cross-ice pass to the high slot. Helmer wristed the puck into the top of the net to slash the Huskies lead. 3-2 after two periods.

2nd Intermission

I never write about intermission speeches except in summary, but this one will go down in USC Ice Hockey history as perhaps its great coaching moment. Players told me later that it was the best speech that they'd ever heard in their playing careers. In the locker room, Coach Mark Wilbur got the team down on one knee and told them to close their eyes. What follows below is a rough transcription of what he said next (if I can get the exact quote from Wilbur I will):

Boys, here's what's going to happen. You're going to leave this locker room and tie the game up. But that won't be enough. They will score another goal. You're going to need to score another one to tie it again. And then you know what's going to happen next? You're going to go out there and TEAR THEIR (expletive)-ING HEARTS OUT!

Period 3

And wouldn't you know it, that's exactly how it happened. Five minutes into the period Adams left a puck for captain Mike Gawlik who sent an outlet pass up-ice for Fyrwald. He entered the zone left wing and swung across the offensive zone to the top of the far faceoff circle. His wrist shot fluttered following a deflection by Daniel Carson and found its way into the top half of the net. Tie hockey game. Fyrwald nearly gave USC the lead on a rush with Adam Zacuto, but he clanged the crossbar again. That miss gave the Huskies a small amount of momentum back. Alex Lofthus took a penalty midway through the period and, to Wilbur's script, Washington cashed in on the powerplay. After a scramble save, Adams fell down and out. James circled from behind the net like a hawk and got a good look at goal. He snapped a puck at Adams, who tried to pop up and stop it, but it was no use. 4-3 Washington and the Huskies had just a half of a period left to taste their first Pac-8 title. However that night was going to be a Hollywood ending, not a Seattle one. Senior Cory Adler won a draw deep in Washington's zone over to Nick Helmer. The freshman from Minnetonka did the rest. He undressed the lone Huskie defenseman and glided to the near side post with the puck on his backhand. Helmer capped the move by roofing the backhand just below the crossbar to tie the game once more with just shy of 6 minutes left. Dougan snapped his stick on the goal post in frustration. Next goal was going to win the championship. With 24 seconds remaining, Dante Caravaggio missed Lofthus on a long breakout pass for a potentially costly icing call. The draw came to Adams' right and the Huskies won it over to Corey James. For an instant it looked like the deadly Washington forward would wrist the puck home. Jason Bush had other ideas. He came across the ice to poke the puck away with a desperation effort. It came loose to Lofthus. The speedy junior grabbed the rubber and skated hard down the left wing boards. Huskie blueliner Bryce Johnson skated towards the boards to try and cut Lofthus off and got a piece of the Trojan forward. He didn't get nearly enough. Lofthus shrugged off Johnson, kept his feet moving and pulled away off of the boards in towards the left faceoff circle. He threw the puck in front to Ryder Fyrwald who was crashing the net. Fyrwald reached out his stick and pushed it triumphantly into the back of the cage. 12.6 seconds left on the clock. Anaheim Ice exploded into what was the loudest sounding cheer I've ever heard. The whole team jumped up and down and Wilbur turned beet red, he pumped his fist and pointed to the crowd. Bryce Johnson collapsed with his head and his heart in his hands. Fyrwald and Lofthus had just ripped the life out of the Huskies. The game's remaining 12.6 seconds were inconsequential but sweet nonetheless. UW never came close to getting a shot off. When the clock hit all 0's, USC was the champions for the 8th time and the party was on.

Postgame

The dogpile hit Adams moments later and sticks and gloves littered the rink surface. Fans streamed onto the ice before management kicked them off. After things settled down and the handshakes were over, captain Michael Gawlik lifted the championship trophy high. Fyrwald received the MVP plaque for his 8 goal (officially 6) performance. As the team got ready to head to the locker room to continue celebrating, the referees initially directed USC to the rink door at the other end of the ice, away from a loving mob of fans ready to welcome them off the ice. Pac-8 executive director Chris Soriano intervened and USC made the happiest walk back to the locker room of their playing careers, through the excited throng of Trojan fans. One particularly sour note was the missing Champion's Cup, the Pac-8's version of the Stanley Cup. In an utterly classless move by the Oregon Ducks and sheer incompetence by league staff, the trophy was nowhere to be found. It was either on the bus with Oregon as the dethroned defending champions limped home to Eugene with their tail between their legs or was never at the tournament at all in a show of immense arrogance by the top-seeded Ducks. Either way, an unthinkable mistake by the league and a horrendous show of sportsmanship. But even that couldn't dampen Trojan spirits and the exuberant celebration echoed on and on.

Some news and notes from the game:

- In the 6 games Ryder Fyrwald played this season, USC was 5-1. Fyrwald scored 11 goals in those contests. He had an unofficial hat trick in the semifinals and an official one in the championship. Can you imagine how different the season would've been with the talented junior playing full time? Another fun fact. Fyrwald's performance in the title game was on the day before his birthday.

- USC outplayed the Washington nearly the whole contest. They fed off of the energy in the building. Some unfortunate bounces added to the drama and set up the comeback effort (something the Trojans had to do in all 3 tournament games), but the Trojans would not be denied. They went through the #4, #1, and #2 seeds to win the title.

- It's the second year that Washington has had their hearts ripped out by a rival. They lost 4-3 to arch-rival Oregon last year. They avenged those losses by winning the I-5 Cup (which Oregon also conveniently forgot the night it was won). However, the great season ends in dissapointment again. They're still without a title. Don't worry Huskies fans, they'll be back.

- The Trojans had revenge on their mind. UW came from down 3 goals to upset the Trojans in the semifinals last season. It was a gut check to a Trojan team that had made the Pac-8 finals for 3 years running. Maybe USC gave Oregon a similar gut check this season?

- The ghost of the Mickey Meyer incident in 2007 is gone and the shadow from that unfortunate occurence in Utah has been lifted.

- Although this was not the Miracle on Ice, there are some parallels. Oregon was the league's Russia for the last two seasons. Dominant and unrelenting. USC took them down in the semifinals in comeback fashion. Washington was the Finland that the Trojans needed to topple for the hardware, and they did so with another come-from-behind effort.

- Two turning points happened to make this title possible. One was the scrimmage on Monday. It lifted the team's spirits and made them forget the 4-game losing streak. Two was the Clark McClanathan bringing the crowd into the game full force during the second period. They truly were the 7th man, and they were roused by the unmatched enthusiasm of #7.

- Credit goaltender Phil Adams for maintaining his composure. His first period was frustrating and he could have easily lost his head. He didn't and only allowed one goal the remaining 40 minutes. The sweetest back-to-back wins of his playing career.

- Previously, no team seeded lower than 2 had ever won the league championship.

- There were times during the frustrating regular season Coach Wilbur appeared to be close to quitting. But he stuck things out, and I'm not sure USC wins if he's not behind the bench. Three specific coaching moves he, and Coaches Ramirez and Langille made stick out in my mind. The second intermission speech, the late substitution of Alex Schaffhausen for Nick Helmer before the second period goal, and moving O'Neill to forward after his defensive pairing was -3 in the first. This kind of a win has rekindled his love for Trojan hockey I'm sure.

- The core offensive players on this team are all eligible to return except for Cory Adler. The defense will take a big hit however as several goaltenders and blueliners are all a semester away from graduating. However one thing sure to return is the swagger that comes with hanging a banner.

- This game was my final one after 4 years behind the microphone for USC Ice Hockey. The team couldn't have sent me out on a better note. It's been an honor, a pleasure, and a joy to watch this team over my USC career. I'm glad it all ended on such a high moment. I'll remember this game and this team forever.

In this morning's Pac-8 banquet/brunch in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Anaheim, the three All Pac-8 Teams were named.

The Trojans leading scorer, Adam Zacuto, was named to the 2nd team of forwards. Dante Caravaggio, assistant captain and most dynamic blueliner, was named to the 2nd team of defensemen.

Overall, the number of players from each team broke down as follows:

Oregon: 5 -(Sam Cehula - 3rd, Ian Law - 3rd, Wren Arbuthnott - 1st, Justin Lacasse - 1st, Tom Stocklin - 1st)

Dynasty Destroyers: Trojans Shake the Pac-8 With 4-3 Semifinal Win Over Ducks

Hey everyone,

Since USC's 2007 Pac-8 Championship, Oregon has set the league on fire and broken Trojan hearts year after year. Following that game, the Ducks won 7 straight in the series and two Pac-8 titles of their own. The streak would have to fall someday, but was this 5-8 David good enough to topple 14-2 Goliath? Well 60 minutes on a Friday night would tell the tale. Winner goes to the title game, loser bows their heads and endures a consolation match. Here's what happened:

Period 1

Just like the morning game, the Trojans started off on the wrong foot. 3 minutes in, Cam Forni used a great attacking effort to burn by both defenseman and crash hard into netminder Phil Adams with the puck. Adams, the puck, and the net went flying backwards. The linesman was right along the goal line and told the official to signal a good goal. He did amidst Trojan protests and it was 1-0 Dcks. Then USC got a big break. The offense was stalled and Adam Zacuto was able to get a rink-wide pass for Ryder Fyrwald. From the far edge of the far faceoff circle, Fyrwald swung in a low prayer along the ice. It slipped under goaltender Wren Arbuthnott's pads somehow and slid across the line to tie the game. Forni answered back for the Ducks. He used a long low shot that squeaked by Adams to make it 2-1. Things proceeded to get chippy. Out of a scrum in front of the Trojan net, Dante Caravaggio was dragged out and given a 2 minute minor for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct for words to the referee after the call. Arbuthnott cleared a dump on net to the near boards, and Fyrwald very simply ran him and sent the netminder tumbling to the ice. A clear penalty unnoticed. But the referees missed an even bigger one in Oregon's favor. As the last seconds of the period were ticking away, Zacuto came free and alone, initially 2 on 0. Duck forward Ian Law backchecked and in desperation, hooked Zacuto to deny the chance. Arguably a penalty shot, but a minor penalty at the least. Referees denied both. Zacuto told me that the referees claimed that Law lifted the stick instead of hooking the body. Not by a long shot. 2-1 Oregon after 1.

Period 2

USC used that anger from the questionable calls to their advantage, just like they used Zack Keith getting plowed into to motivate them that morning against UCLA. They came out of the locker room on an absolute tear. Arbuthnott held his ground until USC got its second power play. Mitchell Landsinger fed Cory Adler just behind the net. Adler wrapped the puck around the far post and Arbuthnott's right pad and jammed it through daylight between the five-hole. Tie hockey game. 4 minutes after that another powerplay effort came through. This time Fyrwald picked his way onto the doorstop around Bruin penalty killers and stuffed a low puck between Arbuthnott's pads for the big lead. The Trojans nearly doubled that lead, but a Zacuto goal was disallowed because Lofthus was in the crease. On the other end, Adams was brilliant. His two biggest saves of the night came from an Ian Law breakaway and a Derek Wolfson buzzer-beating shot towards goal. Law had Adams beaten dead to rights, using a fake to catch Adams at the near post before dragging back and taking aim at the open side of the net. Adams somehow, someway slid over in time and got just enough on the puck to keep it out. Wolfson nearly finished off a Ducks flurry from the paint at the far post. He chopped a quick snap shot at a completely empty net. Adams reached backward and to his left with his glove hand and caught the puck at the line right as the clock ran out. Ridiculous save and one that saved USC's lead, at least for the moment.

Period 3

Adams weathered the storm, with some help from costly Ducks penalties in the final frame. But a 5-on-3 that could've sealed the game turned into new life for Oregon. After a brief 5-on-3 became a 5-on-4, Forni used great neutral zone presence to intercept a pass and break Derek Wolfson into the attacking zone 1-on-1. Wolfson went wide and skated to just below the faceoff dot before winding and firing a slap shot over Adams' shoulder and perfectly into the top corner. The shorthanded goal with 8:50 left seemed to turn the tide briefly in Oregon's favor, but USC maintained their composure. Clark McClanathan nearly got the go-ahead goal with a late breakaway that he or his linemates couldn't finish off for the life of them on several rebound tries. The Trojans kept coming and with 1:18 showing on the clock it paid off. The puck was thrown into a scrum in front of Arbuthnott. Zacuto had it on his backhand with defensemen all over him and jammed the puck low and just fast enough to trickle by Arbuthnott and across the line. (CORRECTION: The initial try from Zacuto did not go in, but apparently Fyrwald was the last to touch it for an unofficial hat trick) The pro-USC crowd went nuts as did Zacuto. Tense moments followed. Both teams called timeouts, and the Ducks got one close chance with under 30 seconds remaining. But clutch faceoff wins by Fyrwald in the Trojan defensive end were enough for USC to bleed out the clock and storm the ice. They had done it. Championship ticket... punched.

Some news/notes from the game:

- This was a history-making game for USC. There has never been a team in league history that's made it to the league finals with a losing record.

- What makes this win even more incredible is that USC was playing their second game of the day against a fresh Oregon squad. The Trojans showed no ill effects from the morning win and looked just as dynamic as they did against UCLA.

- A huge what if for Trojan fans has to be, "What if Ryder Fyrwald played in Crosstown Cup Game #5?" He has been fantastic in the 5 games he's played for the team this season. In the two games today, Fyrwald had 4 goals (officially 3), and 2 assists. A playmaker without a doubt.

- Adam Zacuto cemented his place as the Trojans' leading goal scorer and point scorer, at least officially. He was credited with two goals he didn't score (Fyrwald's), and not credited with the goal he did score (the game winner). He could've had two more, if he'd been given the penalty shot and if his other tally wasn't disallowed.

- Dante Caravaggio performed well in spite of the twelve penalty minutes. On Friday, he had 4 assists total. Caravaggio also seemed to make it his personal mission to shut down the explosive Cam Forni. On multiple occasions, Caravaggio stepped up at the blue line to knock away an outlet pass intended to spring Forni into Trojan territory.

- Clark McClanathan was almost not eligible to play in this game, but some last second maneuvering by James Anderson and Coach Wilbur got him in and USC is glad he did. McClanathan was a disruptive force along with Scott Mason and Mitchell Landsinger. They were big parts of an aggressive forecheck. McClanathan was a little bummed about not getting the game winner on his breakaway chance.

- After his performance, I think there is little question that Phil Adams is starting the title game against the Washington Huskies. Shots on goal on the night were 46-20 in favor of Oregon.

- Top-seeded Oregon doesn't just have to deal with this loss and the lost chance at a three-peat. They have a consolation game to play against a disheartened Arizona State squad. Following that, they enjoy a 16-hour bus ride back to Eugene. That could be the longest bus ride these players will ever take.

- I mentioned #3 ASU's hard loss. They played in an instant classic against the #2 Huskies. The Sun Devils took a two-goal second period lead with two banks from behind the goal line off of Danny Dougan's legs and in. The Huskies rallied for three unanswered, including the go-ahead goal with just over 5 minutes to go. 18 seconds later, ASU's Joe Moore tied the game at 3. It stayed that way through regulation before going to a shootout. In that shootout, the Huskies were put in a score-or-it's-over situation three times and scored all three. In the 7th round, UW's Dan Herda finally secured his team's spot in the title game with a game-ender.

- Incredible finish and you know that Washington will come ready to play against USC when the puck drops 7:30 PM Saturday. Especially considering that they've never won a Pac-8 title.

- On the other hand, USC has won a few titles. 7 in fact. They'll go for banner #8 on their home ice. Couldn't be more excited about the final matchup.

Something Sweeter: USC Sharp Late in 7-4 Quarterfinal Win Over UCLA

Hey everyone,

The Pac-8 Tournament opened this morning with a sixth meeting between USC and UCLA. It set up to be a classic. The Trojans were looking to avenge losing the Crosstown Cup to the Bruins 8 days earlier. Winner goes to the Semifinals. Loser goes to the 5th Place Game.

Period 1

Early in the game, it was difficult to tell that USC was a squad seeking revenge. The Bruins jumped out of the gates and took it to a sleepy Trojan squad. Just a minute and a half into the contest, Daniel Vaynter parked himself in front of goal and punched a loose puck in the crease home despite a pile of bodies in front. USC took a too many men on the ice minor penalty a minute later. 30 seconds after that, Charlie Linehan bulged the twine with a seeing-eye wrister to the top corner. Just more than 3 minutes in, UCLA had a 2-0 lead. The Trojans would recover, and the process started with the dominant (and reconfigured) first line of Adam Zacuto, Alex Lofthus, and Ryder Fyrwald. On a man advantage, Zacuto split the Bruin defense but was denied a breakaway goal by Al Ricciardelli. The rebound kicked out to Lofthus, who simply buried it. The momentum went firmly in USC's direction. Ricciardelli stood strong until one dagger of an equalizer came with 48 ticks left on the clock. Dante Caravaggio broke Lofthus loose. Ricciardelli stoned him on the breakaway, but Fyrwald followed with a tying goal on the rebound. 2-2 hockey game after 1, and the Bruins were disheartened thinking they'd missed their window of opportunity.

Period 2

The momentum appeared to roll into the second period. UCLA took a delay of game penalty leaving the locker room too late, and then followed that up with captain Neal Parsons hooking a Trojan to draw another minor. The 5-on-3 took 15 seconds to pay off, and it was the first line that cashed the check. Fyrwald fed Zacuto in the low slot, and Zacuto picked gloveside low as his target. He chose right. The lead didn't last long. Shorthanded, Vaynter one-touched a cross-ice pass that found linemate Zack Tenney at the top of the far faceoff circle. Tenney found daylight in the top of the net with a wrist shot. The game stayed deadlocked for almost the rest of the period. UCLA had several chances to seize the game on several silly Trojan penalties. With under two minutes left though, Zacuto broke through again. This time Lofthus set him up in prime scoring territory. USC's leading scorer made it 4-3.

Period 3

And then the Trojans decided that they didn't like losing games to the Bruins, so they decided to put it away. More than 7 minutes in, Lofthus came on a wide-angle breakaway. Ricciardelli flinched towards the far post and Lofthus thought he caught him, but the Bruin goaltender jerked back and held the post. The puck popped out, to a net-crashing Fyrwald, who jammed it in short-side to double the lead. Another Parsons penalty led to a Trojan goal. Zacuto worked his way to the faceoff circle from the near half-wall. A slight screen in front opened up all the space Zacuto needed. A twisted wrister zinged above Ricciardelli's blocker and into the goal to make it 6-3. Another sniper shot from the Sniper of Troy. Vaynter put a small amount of fear into USC by sliding a short rebound past Zack Keith with 1:01 remaining. But then Max Szentveri got a chance to do something he'd been waiting to all semester. Finish. He took advantage of Bruin desperation and broke down ice alone. Szentveri iced the game with a goodnight goal just under the crossbar. Game over. Trojans championship hopes stays alive for at least one more game.

Some news and notes from the quarterfinal clash.

- This was the largest margin of victory in any of the Crosstown Cup games as well as the most dominant performance by either team.

- Ryder Fyrwald and Alex Schaffhausen were late additions, practicing Wednesday and doing just enough for Coach Wilbur to give them the stamp of approval. Fyrwald made a big mark on the game, scoring 2 goals and assisting on 2 others. Both scores came in typical Fyrwald fashion, on the rebound and not pretty. But they all look the same on the scoreboard.

- USC was without Nick Helmer and Alex Hite. Both had early classes and will be fresh for the big semifinal at 7:30 PM tonight. Expect Helmer to be a man on a mission. No word yet on those line pairings.

- Clark McClanathan was very nearly ineligible for the game. There was a last second scramble to clear him to play in the contest, and that scramble paid off. McClanathan nearly scored on several occasions and played some very solid hockey on the Gold line with Noah Comisar and Cory Adler.

- USC and UCLA both relied heavily on goals from their first line. All 4 Bruin goals came from the top three forwards. 6 of the 7 Trojan goals came from their talented trio.

- The big key to victory was USC getting tenacious. They were relentless on the forecheck and more physical than usual. It wore a short-staffed Bruin team down, and they slowly fell further and further behind.

- Not helping that was the Bruins' lack of depth. Their third line didn't sniff the ice until after Szentveri's putaway marker.

- That goal has got to feel good for Szentveri. He has had more than his share of chances and simply couldn't put anything home all semester. In fact, Szentveri hadn't scored since the first game of the season! Finally he finishes off a huge rivalry game. There is no more monkey on his back.

- To quote a phrase I've used a lot this year. Keith was solid, but not spectacular. No bad goals, but not a lot of breathtaking saves either. He is undeniably tough though. Vaynter barreled into him on a 2-on-1 rush at full speed. Trojans wanted an intent-to-injure misconduct call, but didn't receive even a minor penalty. Keith took a while to find his bearings, but stayed in the game and finished off the win.

- Ricciardelli was still impressive despite the high amount of goals allowed. Vaynter's 3-point effort fighting a losing cause also sells short his play in this game and this season.

- Funny stat. Only players with the #18 scored in the second period. That's Zack Tenney and Adam Zacuto.

- USC has not beaten Oregon since winning its last Pac-8 Championship in the epic 2007 title game. That one took a last minute equalizer and a similarly last-minute game-ender in OT.

Laughter is the Best Medicine: Semi-Serious Scrimmage Recap

Hey everyone,

USC met familiar foe Long Beach State at their normal practice time, at their normal practice rink in front of a packed house of 5 fans. This wasn't a game, but for USC it was almost certainly something they needed. It was a chance to forget and it was certainly the best USC practice the team could have expected. The scrimmage had two referees, two 30 minute halves, and no penalties called. It was friendly, but full contact and full speed. The style reminded me a bit of an All-Star game. Lots of offense, not nearly enough defense. Here's some observations from the USC bench.

- The Trojans solidified lines for Pac-8's. It looks like barring any late absences, it will be

Cardinal: Helmer, Adler, Lofthus

Gold: Zacuto, Comisar, Landsinger

Teal: McClanathan, Mason, Szentveri

Green: Ernst, Anderson, Dawson

- Those combinations worked fairly well during the scrimmage, and USC had something it has been missing all season long. Scoring balance. Cardinal line scored 2 goals. Gold line scored 3 goals. Teal line scored 2 goals. Offensive chemistry was there far more than it has been in months. A positive sign for this weekend, perhaps.

- Three forwards in particular stood out to me during the scrimmage. Adam Zacuto, Cory Adler, and Scott Mason.

- For Zacuto's part, the Sniper of Troy struck fear into the heart of well, his own goaltender. Phil Adams swapped into net for Long Beach State for the second half of the scrimmage. Zacuto got his first on Phil by flipping the puck up in the air a little toward the near post side and then wristing a trademark top-corner shot past Adams' glove-side. Zacuto used a little backhand to get his second on Adams, and finished off the hat trick from a low set-up feed from Mitchell Landsinger.

- Cory Adler looked like a man on a mission the entire scrimmage. He skated harder and with more intent than he has all year. Adler got the Trojans' first tally of the scrimmage with a hard-charging goal off of a rush. Look out, Adler is one to watch this Friday as he enters his last Pac-8 Tournament.

- Scott Mason showed off that scoring potential that gets hidden when he sits in the penalty box or fills more of a physical role. His first goal was a neat backhand following Hite pinching and keeping the puck inside the blue line. His second goal was a top shelf beauty that had Coach Wilbur asking: "Where did that come from?". However, he also had his stick up too high on a couple of occasions and will need to watch his discipline this upcoming weekend.

- Goaltender Phil Adams got nothing but grief from his bench. After Adam Kwon let in a weird angle shot late in the "first half", Wilbur ribbed the goaltender. "That one was from almost as wide as the one you let in on Thursday." Adams laughed, shook his head and replied, "Too soon, coach. Too soon." Following Zacuto's first goal, the bench chided Adams for not covering Zacuto's favorite corner on the shot. It was all in good fun.

- The defense adopted a habit of doing ten pushups after every goal allowed. Long Beach responded by doing crunches after their first goal allowed, and later, by doing pushups that were a little closer to a whole different kind of workout (family blog, use your imagination). Even the 49er goaltender did pushups after allowing a goal.

- This was a controlled scrimmage, and Coach Wilbur relished his opportunity to control. At the start of a lengthy powerplay practice, Wilbur realized that the Teal line was out there and not the desired Cardinal line. Coach proceeded to pull out his whistle and halt play from the bench. Players and referees were confused for a minute, before one of the officials skated to the bench to get clarification. "It's a coach's dream come true," said Wilbur.

- Adams made his first appearance of the scrimmage by making a live line change behind the play with the 49er keeper.

- On one bad giveaway by Justin O'Neill, Coach yelled his lungs out in a funny, almost mocking kind of way. As the blueliner skated back to the bench, he smiled at Wilbur and said, "I'm just trying to make it exciting Wilbur!"

- USC's coaches weren't the only ones giving the players advice. As the 49ers broke through the neutral zone, they egged James Anderson to backcheck harder.

- Defensively USC gave up a boatload of odd-man rushes. That could be a by-product of the night being a scrimmage rather than a game, but it's something that needs to be tightened up in a big, big way before the tournament. One of the specific problems was that a defenseman would pinch in and get the puck in behind the net with possession, but none of the forwards would drop back to cover for him. UCLA got most of their goals off of turnovers and odd-man rushes.

- Following the 7-7 tie, both benches emptied for an (almost) all squad shootout. Highlights included: Zacuto's two shootout goals with the exact same move he always uses. The second one was met with boo's from his team because he'd jumped the line and gone twice.

- Coach Wilbur saw this as a perfect opportunity to get the team having fun again following the loss to the Bruins. It certainly appeared to give the guys a boost. During my time at USC, the team has always played better when it's been having fun and bringing enthusiasm to the bench. Of course, winning helps that more than anything...

- The Trojans will practice Wednesday in Anaheim for one final tune-up before Pac-8's.

Possible positive signs here, but it's hard to know for sure until Friday morning less than five days away.

Thrilling Demise: Bruins Hoist Crosstown Cup With 6-4 Rollercoaster Win at USC's Expense

Hey everyone,

From swept last year to studs this year, the Bruins have officially made their point. And in a way, USC may have made theirs. Tonight's game was not the final word on the rivalry for the year. That honor goes to next Friday's early morning quarterfinal clash. Make no mistake though, this one hurts USC regardless of the outcome of that sixth game. Here's how UCLA lifted the Cup Thursday night. This may have been the highest scoring goaltender duel I've seen.

Period 1

The game did not start off particularly epic. The jitters were evident on both sides early. For half of a period, the teams felt each other out. Then USC got rolling with a goal from a usual goal scorer in a very unusual way. With his teammates changing behind him, blueliner Jason Bush skated the puck deep into Bruin territory. Bush skated around the UCLA net and sent a centering feed that missed everything. Fresh from the bench, Alex Lofthus charged and held the zone before ripping a slap shot cleanly past Bruin goaltender Al Ricciardelli. That started a surge of Trojan momentum. Just minutes later, Adam Zacuto and Noah Comisar used that edge to create some scoring magic. Breaking in 2-on-2, Zacuto played a little give-and-go with Comisar. The return pass was dead on and Zacuto had a step and the puck on the doorstep. Instead of picking a corner, Zacuto worked his way to the near post side almost all the way to the goal line. He had inches to work with and somehow found the perfect line between the near post and Ricciardelli to double the lead. What followed was the first big swing of the pendulum. The Trojans peppered Ricciardelli with shots, and very nearly scored on multiple occasions. A Zacuto low-corner wrist shot went into the net, but the goal was waved off because Alex Lofthus was ruled to have interfered with Ricciardelli (a fair call). The Bruin netminder kept the dam from breaking open time and time again. UCLA received respite from the barrage with a game-changing goal. Omar Sandhu nearly tallied a goal on a rush that caught the Trojan defense sleeping. USC goalie Phil Adams kicked it out. Daniel Vaynter followed with a rebound try. Denied again. But the second rebound popped out juicily for the Bruins' Linehan. He wristed a perfect shot to the top corner to cut the deficit in half with just over 15 seconds left before intermission. The Bruins nearly tied it up immediately afterward, but time ran out in the period.

Period 2

But just because time ran out in the first doesn't mean the Bruins momentum did. UCLA continued the rally with Nick Panzica's game-tying rebound goal. Mitchell Landsinger's completely unnecessary roughing call gave the Bruins a long 5-on-3. USC nearly escaped it, but with 1 second left to kill, Zack Tenney put home another tight rebound flurry to give UCLA their first lead of the night. It held for about 5 minutes before the Trojans used a powerplay of their own to respond. Zacuto beat a defender off of the left wing half-wall and worked his way to the faceoff circle. The Sniper of Troy then did what he does best, pick the gloveside high corner with a precise wrist shot. That left the score tied 3-3 with 20 minutes left for either team to go home with the Crosstown Cup.

Period 3

Nervousness bogged down both teams' play for the early stages of the period. Seven minutes in, however, USC used a high-powered line of Adam Zacuto, Nick Helmer, and Alex Lofthus to get the edge. It did not come easy. Zacuto was denied his hat trick by Ricciardelli on the first shot. The rebound came to Lofthus, who floated a knuckling backhand that inched its way to the goalline but not in. A Bruin defenseman swept it away, but right to Nick Helmer. The clutch Trojan was denied his first shot, but beat Ricciardelli on the fourth effort total. Immediately afterward, USC came inches from securing the game on a quick rush and a followup chance. Ricciardelli held once again at a key moment and the Bruins counter-attacked right away. It worked. Working off of a pass from linemate Alex Horowitz, Jonathan Lee was forced wide away from the far post by the defense. Lee sent in a prayer from a tough angle that found a hole somewhere in Adams for a soft, game-tying goal. In a span of less than a minute, the pendulum erased any Trojan edge caused by Helmer's goal. With 7 minutes to go, the rush yielded another Bruin tally. Entering 3-on-3, Daniel Vaynter set up playing partner Zack Tenney with a puck to his stick. Tenney was forced to his backhand by a defender draped all over him. Tenney flipped the backhand in and it squirted between Adams' armpit and side and into the goal. Once again, the Bruins could smell the Crosstown Cup. Helmer, UCLA's kryptonite in Game 4, nearly killed them again. Lofthus set up Helmer beautifully in front. If Helmer had one split second more, the game is tied late. Ricciardelli took that split second away with a desperation poke check. As the clock hit 1:25, Adams left for an extra skater. It didn't help. Following two easy saves by Ricciardelli, the Bruins got free of their zone with the puck. Tenney was around the USC defense, alone and at the far faceoff circle in Trojan territory staring down an empty net. He launched a slap shot that by some incredible miracle rang the post and came out with just over 70 seconds to play. Tenney's choke should have given the Trojans' life. After a draw deep in the Bruins' zone, UCLA came clear again and this time Daniel Vaynter made no mistakes, sending in a wide-angle shot from the bottom of the faceoff circle home. The Bruins erupted because they knew in that moment that the Crosstown Cup was their's.

Some news and notes from the game:

- It's the Bruins' first Crosstown Cup since the 2004-05 season. This scrappy Bruin club doesn't stack up to USC talent-wise, but they blew the Trojans away desire-wise. In every game between the two clubs, UCLA's desire to bring home the Cup was echoed in every minute they played. As Coach Wilbur said following the game, "They simply wanted it more."

- Another remarkable part of this Bruin team is how their conditioning makes up for a blatant lack of depth. I can't remember seeing more than 6 or 7 different forwards over the course of the game. UCLA has some great talent in those top players. Look no further than Daniel Vaynter, Alex Horowitz, or Zack Tenney for that. But I'm not sure I saw a third line touch the ice for the Bruins tonight.

- Bruin Michael Carder separated his AC joint early in the night and will not be available for the tournament. At least according to shoddily kept ACHA statistics, Carder is the Bruins' second-leading goal scorer.

- Fans at any of these five games have gotten more than their money's worth. Each game has been close and a true battle. It's been incredible to watch.

- The Trojans started the following lineup: Michael Gawlik, Jason Bush, Justin O'Neill, Clark McClanathan, Cory Adler, and Phil Adams. Notice a common theme between those 6? If you guessed Senior Night and that this is their last regular season home game, you guessed right.

- Nobody took this loss harder, at least from what I could see, than Phil Adams did. Adams had to be dragged out of the locker room post-game. He sat head down, wordless for a good half-hour before heading out. As I was driving out, I saw Adams sitting on his bag in a similar position in the parking lot. Genuine depression.

- This resonated with me because I remember seeing how former USC quarterback John David Booty reacted following an earth-shattering loss to Stanford my sophomore year. It didn't phase him one bit. He acted as if the loss didn't touch him one bit and reportedly enjoyed a fancy dinner later that night. I never forgave Booty for taking a loss that absolutely killed the campus so lightly. Adams reaction was the exact opposite of Booty's and you can tell how much he truly cared about the game's result.

- This is not out of character for Phil. Following an incredible upset win and brilliant performance against ASU, Adams greeted me in the Trojan locker room with a huge bear hug. Make no mistake, these games do matter to him and they matter a lot. In Phil's defense for tonight, while the last two goals scored on him Thursday were certainly soft, he made some absolute jaw-dropping saves and kept pucks out of the net that he has no business keeping out. That's a characteristic that has followed him this year regardless of whether he's on or off on any given night.

- Adams was simply upstaged by Al Ricciardelli, and what more can you say about the Bruin 'tender. Shots favored the Trojans 37-25. USC could have run away in the first and immediately after the lead-taking goal in the third. Ricciardelli was simply amazing when he needed to be.

- The last five players in the USC locker room were Elliot Dawson, Noah Comisar, Clark McClanathan, Dante Caravaggio, and Phil Adams. Read into that if you'd like.

- Adam Zacuto was an absolute offensive rockstar in this game. Both of his goals were absolute highlight reel tallies. He nows holds a 1-goal lead for the goal-scoring title over Nick Helmer heading down the stretch.

- Two too many men on the ice penalties in the second period helped derail Trojan efforts.

- The crowd at Anaheim Ice was rowdy as expected. Bruin and Trojan fans packed the stands in near equal parts. Fans exchanged incredibly, well, colorful language and on occasion, punches immediately in front of my broadcast position. The USC fans stood just like at a basketball for football game. Even standing on chairs, me and my broadcast partner for the night, Rob McPherson, could not see certain areas of the near-side boards and corners. An adventure of a broadcast.

- Elliot Dawson was wearing street clothes as a healthy scratch. This brings up an interesting debate. On one hand, Dawson has been one of a handful of truly dependable players on the squad and there could be a case made that he's earned a spot in the lineup even if he doesn't see the ice. On the other hand, Dawson was not better talent-wise than any of the players who played in front of him and this game was for the hardware. Tough question.

- USC stepped up it's physical game in a big way in the first period, but settled back into it's usual meek self as the game wore on.

- The Trojans are on a 5-game losing streak, and could enter the Pac-8 tournament on a 6-game slide if the Long Beach State 49ers handle them on Monday night. USC is now 9-19 overall.

Simply Owned: San Jose State Euthanizes USC 11-1

Hey everyone,

USC added talent (Alex Schauffhausen, Adam Zacuto, and Cory Adler) to last night's listless squad, but somehow more ended up being less. This was not a game. This was a surrender. Here's the recap.

Period 1

Starting goaltender Zack Keith had a shining first period, but it didn't start off that way. In the same amount of time it took them to score last night, San Jose State took a 1-0 lead early Saturday. This time it was the dangerous Mickey Rhodes bearing down from the left wing boards. He picked gloveside high corner from an awkward angle to give the Spartans an early lead. Looking for USC's offense? It was non-existent. The rink was tilted towards Keith's end of the rink and the Trojan goaltender valiantly kept the dam from breaking open. The one-goal deficit held through 20 minutes, although USC was incredibly lucky that they weren't down 3 or 4.

Period 2

San Jose State wasted no time in starting to put the contest out of reach. 34 seconds into the period, Rhodes set up Sam Cimino, who picked the same gloveside high corner from a similar angle to double the lead. Cimino returned the favor and set up Rhodes for his second goal of the night just five minutes after that. USC showed a faint glimmer of life a little more than 90 seconds later. Following an icing call, the Trojans overloaded the ice with a talented line made up of Alex Lofthus, Nick Helmer, and Adam Zacuto. Helmer worked from behind the net and found Alex Hite in the high slot. Hite's slapshot was turned aside, but Lofthus gathered the rebound for an awkward backhand at the far post. The slow shot was enough to slide in behind Spartans' goaltender Allesandro Mullane. "That was the only thing that's gone according to plan tonight," Coach Wilbur said during the second intermission. The goal seemed to just anger the Spartans. Mason Console, Jeff Malave, and Steve Stichler all scored in the last 9 minutes of the second to put the game clearly out of reach. None of them were Ketih's fault, but that didn't make them sting any less. 6-1 after 40 minutes.

Period 3

Then the Spartans just rubbed it in. Kyle Dutra sent in a Jeff Sawhill rebound to extend the lead to six on the man advantage. Two minutes after that, Richie Norris sent a perfectly placed saucer pass to Stichler for his second. Another powerplay ten minutes after that resulted in a Lathan Logan goal on another beautiful setup from Richie Vaughan. Logan finished another one off of a USC turnover less than a minute later. Just over a minute after that, Norris put USC in a 10-goal hole with a little over three minutes to go. As I mentioned, this was a game where USC flat-out surrendered, and the third period illustrated that better than any.

Some news/notes from the night:

- In four games between the two teams this year, San Jose State scored 41 goals to USC's 7. They won each game by an average of 8.5 goals. The Spartans got scoring production from each line in Saturday's game. Alex Lofthus was the only Trojan who scored all weekend. But on a positive note... oh wait, never mind.

- The type of loss shown in both games this weekend is hellacious on a team's mentality. It's one thing to be beaten by a good team but give it your all. It's another one altogether to wave the white flag and get steamrolled by that same good team. This weekend could not have come at a worse time for USC. They face a scrappy UCLA team that has given them major trouble all season long in the biggest game of the season on Thursday. They then host the Pac-8 Tournament the following weekend and will need the will to win two games in the same day if they want to advance to the finals. There isn't a whole lot of time to recover and turn things around.

- Zack Keith gave up 23 goals in his two games against the Spartans. Tonight's 11 allowed were not his fault. One of them should have arguably been disallowed as a San Jose State player appeared to be interfering with Keith in his crease. In all honesty, Keith probably had the best game out of any of the USC players.

- Mike Gawlik was gone for this game. The captain had arguably the best excuse for missing a game I've ever heard. He will be at the Super Bowl on Sunday as the Colts and Saints square off, cheering as hard as he can for his hometown Colts. Hard to not excuse that one, especially given the ridiculous reasons other players have missed games of late.

- Adam Zacuto and Alex Schauffhausen sat out the majority of the first period as punishment for missing Friday's game due to a fraternity invite.

- Coach Wilbur made it clear that no decision has been made yet on Thursday's starter for Crosstown Cup Game 5. Neither goaltender would appear to be a lock for the job. The basis for the decision, whichever way it goes, will be the most interesting part I think.

- Despite their 9-18 record on the season, it struck me that USC has done one thing particularly well this year. They are a perfect 2-0 in shootouts (although that's cancelled a bit by an 0-2 record in OT). This isn't surprising given the individual talent on this USC hockey team. In fact, that talent level is what Trojan fans can cling to in spite of the potentially bleak outlook. Unfortunately for USC, the lack of that talent's ability to show up or play effectively together has led them to a significantly subpar overall record.

- If ever there was a weekend that USC needed Clark McClanathan's heart it was this one. The lack of a good dose of Clark translated into the on-ice results.

Exciting game Thursday. Intrigue and storylines abound... the biggest of which is the Crosstown Cup going to the winner. Trojans have come back in the series (from down 0-2 to tie it 2-2) and in the last two games (down two goals in the third period of Game 3, tied the game up with 9.1 seconds remaining in Game 4). Everything on the line and it should be a rowdy crowd at Anaheim Ice when the puck drops.

Sadly In Character: Trojans Ripped Apart 8-2 By Spartans

Hey everyone,

It's been no secret this season that USC has had a poor record when it comes to games this season. 9-17 overall, 5-8 in the Pac-8. But as bad as that is, they have one record that's even worse. Their attendance. Missing in action Friday night for varying reasons with varying degrees of legitimacy: Adam Zacuto, Ryder Fyrwald, Alex Schauffhausen, Cory Adler, Joshua Frazier, and Clark McClanathan. With fifth ranked San Jose State in town, not having all hands on deck made a difficult task nearly impossible.

Period 1

It only took 3 and a half minutes for that to become clear. Following a nice play by Jason Bush, his defensive partner Dante Caravaggio gave the puck away. The Spartans' productive first line hopped on the opportunity and Mickey Rhodes fed Andy Dickerson for a one-time goal. 7 minutes later, San Jose State took advantage of their first powerplay chance of the night. Mason Console sent a shot into a scrum of players in front of USC netminder Phil Adams. Blueliner Jeff Sawhill found it and drained the shot for a 2 zip Spartan lead. Meanwhile, USC registered only 4 shots on goal the entire period to San Jose State's 20. As the clock ticked under a minute, Steve Stichler broke into USC's territory on a breakaway. His first shot rang off of Adams mask and popped back out to Robbie Vaughan. Adding insult to injury, Vaughan made it 3-0 late. In all fairness, it should have been worse as a clearly scored top-shelf Spartan goal popped out as quickly as it went in and wasn't counted. One of the ugliest periods of hockey all season for USC.

Period 2

Things got better quickly in the second. Starting the period on the powerplay, Nick Helmer quickly rushed in and wristed a shot on goal. Spartans' goaltender Caleb Murray kicked it out with the pad, but Alex Lofthus was hungry for the rebound and stuffed it five-hole just 19 seconds into the period. That was as close as USC got. 90 seconds later, Spartan Richie Norris found a puck sitting on his stick right next to the near post following a funny ricochet. Unfortunately for the Trojans, neither Adams nor anyone else on the ice knew about it. Norris fired the rubber past a clearly unaware Adams for the quick answering goal. Shortly thereafter, Stichler broke in on a low breakaway. Adams was too far back in his net, and nowhere close to the near post side that Stichler was coming in from. Stichler's easy top corner goal made it 5-1 SJSU. Later in the period, Lofthus used another powerplay to get another second period goal. This time he creeped along the left goalline and used a small deke to open enough daylight to squeeze another puck into the net. The 2-2 second period still left USC in a 3-goal hole, but things had most definitely improved.

Period 3

But the improvement was limited to the second period. 44 seconds into the third period, San Jose State closed the door. Andy Dickerson ripped a shot past Adams to crush any thoughts of a comeback. The dam didn't completely break, however. USC and San Jose State each held their ground defensively until the final minute. Then came a pair of demoralizing goals. On a late powerplay, Jeff Sawhill absolutely hammered a slapshot between Adams' legs with 48 ticks left on the clock. James Lopez broke into the zone 34 seconds after that. The defense forced him wide to the right wing boards. Lopez sent in a bad-angled prayer of a wristshot. Somehow, Adams let it by. The scoreboard changed from 7-2 to 8-2 and Adams threw the puck to center ice in frustration. A backbreaking way to end a hockey game.

Some news and notes from the contest:

- San Jose State isn't just talented, they're also deep. 7 different goal scorers filled up the scoresheet for the Spartans. Only Dickerson scored twice. Three goals were scored by the third line. Just about every player seems to be fast, and all three lines should have scored at some point.

- Aggregated over three games, the Spartans are beating the Trojans 30-6. In his two games against them, Phil Adams has given up a combined 18 goals. In his last two starts, Adams has allowed a combined 16 goals. He may, in fact, be behind Zack Keith on the depth chart after sloppy back-to-back games. Keith may determine a lot of that with his start on Saturday.

- Max Ernst made his return following a very legitimate off-ice illness. It was great to see him back out there.

- Shawn Ahern made an impression in his third USC game. He plays a similar game to Scott Mason's. Very physical.

- The first line was shuffled multiple times during the game as it has all season. The initial Cardinal line was Max Szentveri, Nick Helmer, and Alex Lofthus. I'm not sure if USC has played with the same starting line in consecutive games since a few games into the season. I'm no hockey player, but I think that might have a little to do with the lack of chemistry on the ice.

- USC's locker room has a dangerously conciliatory mindset right now. This team's championship game could be Thursday in Crosstown Cup Game #5, and not February 20th. The Trojans have three regular season games left to prove that they have higher aspirations.

Trojans get another crack at San Jose State tomorrow. If the trend of losing by 2 less each time to the Spartans holds, USC will lose 6-2 tomorrow (12-2 first game, 10-2 second game, 8-2 third game....). Whether they do or not is entirely up to them.

Floodgates Open: USC Defense Struggles in 8-4 Loss to Washington

Hey everyone,

With the same short squad, USC tried to dig deep and do what they could not last night. Upset second-seeded Washington.

Period 1

The upset bid got off to a good start. On their second powerplay attempt of the night, Michael Gawlik fed Nick Helmer in the low slot. Helmer dished to Max Szentveri at the far post, who sent the puck right back to Helmer for one of the easiest goals he's scored this year. The Huskies took 5 minutes to respond, but did. Dangerous defenseman Daniel Carson came in 2-on-1. USC's Phil Adams guessed pass, but guessed wrong. Carson threw the puck through a flailing Adams to tie the game. Justin O'Neill took a penalty with 26 seconds left in the period and that turned out to be a mistake. Straight off of the ensuing faceoff, Carson sent a low and slow shot in from the point. It was headed wide until Phil Harezlak redirected behind Adams and in.

Period 2

The Huskies continued rolling, with some more help by Trojan penalties. Scott Mason received 2 for high sticking and Dante Caravaggio got another one a minute later for unsportsmanlike conduct. Washington didn't waste the 5-on-3. Harezlak punched home a rebound early into the major man advantage. Then Ian Shook bounced a puck off of Adams and in on the 5-on-4. A three-goal deficit entering the second break is a bit tougher mentally than a two-goal one, and Caravaggio agreed. Caravaggio held in a Huskies clear and sent in one of his trademark slapshots. Fellow blueliner Alex Hite was forechecking on the play and was skating through the crease. The rubber hit his skate and pinballed past Washington goaltender Danny Dougan. After some discussion, between the referee and his linesmen, the goal stood (and was credited to Caravaggio for whatever reason). 4-2 Huskies after 2.

Period 3

USC has been down by this margin in 3 of their last 4 games. At least of late, they're used to the comeback. What they aren't used to is being steamrolled in the ensuing third period. A minute in, Washington tallied another powerplay goal. Arne Krogh got credit, but it could have been any of three Huskies battling in a scrum in front of Adams. Less than two minutes later, Scott Mason answered. He sent a backhander from between the faceoff circles past Dougan's pad and in. That was as close as USC got. 18 seconds later, Dougan left a puck behind his net for Carson. The Huskies' defenseman did the rest of the work, flat out embarassing the Trojans with a coast-to-coast goal. Carson had 5 points on the night. The Washington first line followed that up 7 seconds later just off of the draw. Dan Herda one-timed a feed from Corey James home to extend the lead to 7-3 just 3 minutes into the period. Nearly 9 minutes following that, they put the nail in the coffin. On the powerplay, Caravaggio threw a pass straight to Huskie Sean Hale. He took it the other way and finished the goal and the Trojans. If that one didn't seal it, a piece of horrendous officiating seconds later did. Helmer entered Washington territory, burned around the defense and the net, and finished off a wraparound. The only problem was that the referee didn't see it go in. The puck rebounded off of the inside base of the net and sat right on the line inside the near post. USC too busy celebrating and Washington was too busy being frustrated over allowing the goal. Eventually, Szentveri realized it wasn't in, made a stretching effort for the puck. Dougan beat him to it and clamped the glove on top. After another long discussion, the goal was disallowed to Helmer's disbelief. So on the next rush in, Helmer scored what can only be described as a "screw you" goal. He pulled another wraparound across the line and looked relieved when the referee finally signaled goal. But the USC momentum didn't continue and the game ended 8-4 in favor of Washington.

Some news/notes:

- Not Phil Adams' best effort. Several goals he should have had, and nobody knows that more than Phil. Adams appeared to have the edge on Zack Keith to grab the starter's spot for the Pac-8 tournament. Now things are far more up in the air. Both goaltenders should have two more starts to make their case. An indicator of who is in the lead could be the chosen starter for Game 5 of the Crosstown Cup. If that's the case, then each player has one and only one chance against San Jose State.

- Dante Caravaggio had one of those nights. In talking to him after the locker room he mentioned that his psychology was thrown for a loop during the course of the game. It showed on the giveaway that led to the eighth goal of the game. The assistant captain will have to pick himself off of the mat in a hurry with SJSU next on the schedule.

- I mentioned Max Szentveri was USC's ultimate "Close But Not Quite" player. He solidified that notion tonight. Although he set up linemate Nick Helmer with two assists, he couldn't get one of his own (but not for lack of opportunities). On Helmer's disallowed wraparound goal, Szentveri had one sitting on the line that he just couldn't push across. After Helmer's allowed wraparound goal, Helmer set up Szentveri perfectly on a 2-on-1 rush. Szentveri had 90% open goal and 10% Dougan's glove to shoot at. He hit the glove and nearly broke his stick in frustration afterward.

- Scott Mason showed two trademark elements of his game tonight while playing in front of his parents. He showed an underrated scoring touch, popping in a backhand and nearly adding another. But he also showed his propensity for taking penalties, sitting for four minutes of the second period.

- James Anderson and the Teal line actually held their own in the game. Anderson and Ahern teamed up for a solid scoring chance in the first. Coaches expressed surprise that Anderson could get a shot on goal, but then again, Anderson is generally the butt of the team's jokes.

- Special teams were king this game. 8 goals were scored on the powerplay or shorthanded.

- After the match, Coach Wilbur treated the entire team to a dinner at Buca di Beppo, conveniently located right outside the hotel.

- Trojans are locked into the 5 seed in the Pac-8 and their opponent will almost certainly be the UCLA Bruins. That would be the sixth meeting between the two clubs this year. Their likely second round matchup (to really look too far ahead) would be the Oregon Ducks.

Power Outage: Lack of Trojan Firepower Gives Huskies 3-2 Win

Hey everyone,

The Trojans took their last road swing of the semester up to Washington in their first trip back since their 2008 Pac-8 Tournament loss to Oregon. They faced a UW squad that knocked them out of the running for a Pac-8 title last year in Eugene. Worse for USC, the forwards they were missing would likely outscore the forwards they had with them on the trip. Adam Zacuto, Ryder Fyrwald, Alex Lofthus, Joshua Frazier, Mitchell Landsinger, Max Ernst, and Cory Adler all MIA for one reason or another. With the firepower missing and 15 total players in Washington, USC would need to scrape for their offense.

Period 1

The Trojans had a chance to get set early. UW took three penalties in the early going, but the mixed up Cardinal line of Szentveri, Helmer, and Comisar couldn't come through. When the Huskies finally got a chance of their own with a man up, they could. Two way-defenseman Daniel Carson wired a shot from the point. Zack Keith saved the puck once, but left a rebound loose. Jordan Chernesky jammed at it, but Keith stood tall. A second rebound try popped loose to Phil Harezlak who finished it off. That was the only goal of the period. The Trojans had a pair of tries in the slot, but couldn't finish and didn't have a large amount of quality chances. They skated to the locker room down a goal.

Period 2

The goals came in the second period, but not entirely in USC's favor. A hair over 7 minutes into the period, Nick Helmer started into his one-man show. He picked his way around the Huskie defenders, using balance and hands to get through. Taking it from the far post in an arc to the near faceoff circle, Helmer pulled the trigger.... on a pass. It was right on Noah Comisar's tape back door and Comisar one-timed the equalizer home. But then UW took control. 4 minutes later, the Huskies first line worked the puck to the crease. Two unmarked Huskies stood right in front and took advantage of Keith. Dan Herda reached in and grabbed a puck that just sat behind Keith's pads and hooked it across the line. Helmer nearly tied the game up with a wraparound try that had Danny Dougan, the Washington netminder, well out of position. But Huskie forward Corey James crashed back and poke checked the puck away at the last instant. With under 2 minutes remaining, James showed off his offensive ability. Grabbing a loose puck just outside of the Trojan zone, James turned and burned by Dante Caravaggio. He swept across Jason Bush and left him grabbing for air before coming in at a wide angle alone against Keith. Instead of dekeing across the face of the goal and trying to beat Keith that way, James made a move the other direction, towards the goal line. He got around Keith and tucked the puck inside the near post for a 3-1 Huskie edge entering the second intermission.

Period 3

After looking incapable of a comeback, the Trojans broke through on a power play as the clock ticked under 7 minutes to go in the game. Jason Bush creeped in from the left wing point to the top of the faceoff circle, and wired a shot through a heavily screened (and potentially interfered with) Danny Dougan. The goal sparked a little life in the Trojan attack and the potential for another third period rally was apparent. But it all came melting down in a bizarre sequence with just 50 seconds left. Following another close chance for Szentveri, he was taken to the boards by Jordan Chernesky. The Huskie forward and Szentveri locked up before Chernesky threw a couple of swings. They each received matching minors. Away from this action, Scott Mason checked a Huskie who was near the loose puck. According to Mason, he told the player, "Buddy, keep your head up." The referee slapped Mason with an unsportsmanlike conduct call that put the Trojans down a goal and a skater. According to Mason, as the linesman escorted him into the box, the linesman apologized for the call. Assistant captain Dante Caravaggio was refused an explanation at the time. Coach Wilbur then blew up and said a series of colorful words that is absolutely an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (use your imagination). The official threw a game misconduct penalty on top of that for Wilbur, ejecting him from the game. Down 5-on-3, the Huskies ran out the clock playing offense the entire time (without scoring a capping goal) and the game ended in a goal UW win.

Here's some news and notes from the contest:

- The frustrating part of this game if you're a USC fan is that despite Washington's second place ranking in-conference, they don't pass the eyeball test as an elite Pac-8 team. That's not to say that the Trojans have, but if I were ranking teams based on what I've seen on the ice, they would come in 4th in overall talent and 3rd as a cohesive unit. ASU and Oregon are strong candidates to win the title. This Trojan team has the raw talent, but needs to build up team chemistry and a consistent will to show up in a hurry if they want to win the hardware. If the Trojans had even two of the laundry list of missing forwards, I don't think they lose.

- What a great arena atmosphere for college hockey. The turnout from UW fans was great, but what really sold it was the Huskies band. They were rock-concert loud, but made it a fun experience. I especially enjoyed their rendition of Kool & the Gang's "Celebration". They only come out to one UW game a year, and they chose this one.

- Zack Keith had a solid, but not spectacular performance. Keith is at his best when he doesn't have to make the flashy looking saves. His style is to always be in the right place. Besides a small rebound coughed up on the first goal, none of the three were bad goals. The defensive zone coverage was to blame for two of the three on the night. In the waning moments of the game, Arne Krogh blasted a puck hard enough that it stuck in Keith's mask. Wow!

- What UW does have is a productive first line. Corey James, Phil Harezlak, and Dan Herda each had a goal, and carried the entire offensive load from a scoring perspective. Their second line isn't bad either (Tristan Wickliff is one to watch out for), but the Huskies didn't go much deeper than that the entire night.

- Noah Comisar has been the beneficiary of a lot of great feeds from his teammates. Give him credit... other Trojan players have a difficult time finishing off goals from the doorstep.

- Max Szentveri is USC's official "Close But Not Quite" player. In games when he's been on the first two lines, he always seems to find himself in prime scoring opportunities but not on the scoresheet. His play reminds me of Michael Nijjar's two seasons ago when the forward would miss on sure goals on a nightly basis. The good news for Szentveri? Nijjar worked out the kinks and started finishing the very next year.

- Elliot Dawson may get two nicknames from now on. "Two Minute" Dawson, for all of the minor penalties he serves on behalf of his teammates, and "Crash Test Dummy". Dawson has a penchant for getting absolutely hammered into the boards multiple times in a game. In the first period, he took two clean, but vicious hits. One of them knocked him backwards into the cornerboards, the other one came close to crunching his collar bone into the offensive zone glass. Somehow, someway, he always seems to get up. Gotta love Dawson's heart and enthusiasm. He's also one of the most under-the-radar comedians on the team.

- Scott Mason got in trouble at the end of the game, but nearly got into a brawl earlier that same period. On a long dump-in, Dougan swallowed up the puck. Mason hustled in from the blue line, and sprayed the goaltender with a close-in hockey stop. There were some angry Huskies after that one.

- Wilbur's game misconduct does not make him ineligible for Saturday's rematch against UW if the NCAA rulebook is to be believed. If he is somehow ineligible, I'm going to make a strong bid to have him commentate on the broadcast.

- Phil Adams was the expected and scheduled starter for the game. However, he was, well, under the weather and simply exhausted. This led to some hilarious moments at Adams' expense on the flight to Seattle. Adams violated nearly every minor, flight-attendant corrected violation on the Jet Blue flight besides wearing his seatbelt. He had a bag on his lap, he had his cell phone on, he had his tray table down and his seat back during taxi, takeoff, and final approach. This led to a good-humored battle between flight attendant Jody and Phil. She won easily. The best moment came when shortly after takeoff, Jody used the plane's PA to tell everyone that there was "a celebrity sitting in 17B that you should ask for an autograph". A fellow traveler one row back across the aisle immediately reached out with a pen and a barf bag for Adams to sign. Priceless.

- Shawn Ahern made his USC debut and arrived early in the second period (he missed the morning flight and got a later one). He looked rusty but added a much needed body at forward. Given time, he could develop into a solid 4th line contributor this season and possibly more next year.

- The Trojans are staying at their road hotel of choice.... a Courtyard Marriott. The team always loves the free internet and roomy beds.

Buzzer Beater: Trojans Stun Bruins in 4-3 Shootout Win

Hey everyone,

The three previous USC-UCLA games this season have all been entertaining, close, and tense. An OT winner for UCLA in Game 1. A late Trojan rally snuffed in Game 2. A penalty shot with 54.6 seconds left turned away to preserve a lead in Game 3. None of them compare to this one. This was the best USC game I've seen since my freshman year (more on that later), and certainly the most insane of the rivalry games I've witnessed. Let's get to the recap.

Period 1

The game started out slowly, which played a bit into USC's favor. The Trojans peppered Al Ricciardelli with shots from all angles, but the Bruin netminder was just as solid as he was on Friday night. Finally, after over 14 minutes of frustration, the Trojans broke through. Nick Helmer broke Adam Zacuto loose on a breakaway with a nifty feed. The Sniper of Troy pulled his favorite move and lifted his shot gloveside high just under the crossbar. A little less than two minutes later, Lofthus got his turn on the breakaway, with the breakout pass coming from Jason Bush this time. Skywalker beat Ricciardelli inside the near post to double the lead. The Bruins kept the Trojans close. With 1:35 left in the period, Zack Keith's rebound control came back to bite him. On the third rebound, Jonathan Lee worked the puck across the line to half the deficit. 2-1 the intermission score. Head coach Mark Wilbur said during the break that he was excited for the second period.

Period 2

Ironic because the second period was characterized by relative boredom. Exciting plays came on hits at center ice, big Ricciardelli saves, Wilbur's gamesmanship (remember that for later) and a sliding Lofthus that took the Ricciardelli and his net into the endboards. Other than that, no goals, and everything ended up status quo after 20 more minutes of hockey.

Period 3

But the next 20 would be a rollercoaster of emotion. On a powerplay carried over from the second period, Lee struck again by sending home a deflected and saved Neal Parsons slapshot. Nearly 10 minutes later, the Bruins put themselves in position to hoist the Crosstown Cup. The powerplay was on for UCLA yet again and this time Parsons got the glory himself. The Trojan defense focused on the dangerous Daniel Vaynter as he streaked in on left wing. Vaynter fed the trailing Parsons in the high slot for a one timed cannon past Keith that bulged the twine. The crowd at Anaheim Ice did it's best to egg the USC comeback on, but it was slow to arrive. Minutes ticked away before the Trojans registered a solid offensive opportunity. Ricciardelli continued to frustrate the USC shooters. The comeback started to gain traction as the clock ticked under 3 minutes left, but still no goals. Keith was pulled with 1:35 to go following a Bruin timeout. Desperation eventually bred excellence. USC threw out Helmer, Zacuto, Lofthus, and Ryder Fyrwald to try and tie the game. Under 15 seconds to go, Helmer had a chance at the far post with Lofthus and Fyrwald parked in front. The initial shot was turned away but Helmer kept going behind the net and around. He wrapped the puck around the near post and just beat Ricciardelli's pad desperately sliding across the crease. The building nearly falls down. Helmer's clutch effort tied the game with just 9.1 seconds left. The game would continue in overtime.

Overtime

Both teams had chances to win the contest, but the real story of the overtime session was a borderline dirty play by Lee in front of Keith. A point shot deflected high in the air. Lee reached high into the air and took a mad swipe to attempt to (illegally) deflect the puck home. The stick glanced the puck and came crashing into Keith's helmet. There was no intention to simultaneously slash and high-stick Keith, but the end result left the Trojan goalie face-down on the ice. After a few scary moments and examination from trainer Cindy Bailey, Keith stayed in the game, keeping a cold Phil Adams on the bench. Surprisingly, no penalty on a ridiculously dangerous play. Ironically, the only mark on Keith's head came from a happy injury later in the game (keep reading). After 5 solid but unproductive minutes, the game would be settled in a shootout.

Shootout

If Zack Keith had any lasting injury, it didn't carry over into the shootout. Daniel Vaynter was the first shooter for UCLA. He was denied by Adams' split save on a penalty shot aimed at the near post last night. Different goalie, different arena, far post effort, same result. Keith retreated and then kicked out his left leg to knock away Vaynter's try. Adam Zacuto shot first for USC. He's a consistent shootout machine and showed it by pulling his favorite move and picking the gloveside high corner once again. Neal Parsons then had his chance. Keith stoned him by closing up 5-hole daylight at the last second. Ryder Fyrwald put USC in a commanding lead with a sliding puck that somehow squirted underneath Ricciardelli's pads and in, possibly 5-hole. Jonathan Lee continued his hot night for the Bruins with a nifty deke towards the far post that he put home. UCLA appeared to show life in the shootout before Helmer re-extended the lead with another near-side shot behind Ricciardelli. Trojan shooters went 3/3. That gave Keith a chance to close the door on the game. Bradley Kay helped by missing past the far post with a similar move to Lee's. Game over, and just like that the Crosstown Cup was tied up 2 games apiece with Game 5 in USC's building. A good night to be a Trojan.

Some news/notes from the rivalry rumble.

- This Trojan team has created a new identity around 3rd period comebacks. This is the third game in a row where USC has rallied in the final act to tie or win a game. Fyrwald, Helmer, and Lofthus seem to turn it on in desperation situations. They may need more than 20 minutes against upcoming Washington and other elite Pac-8 teams.

- This is the most dramatic game USC has played since the Pac-8 Championship game my freshman year. In that one, Shon Smith tied the game with the net empty behind him and under 40 seconds left. Then in overtime, a Trojan bench warmer (whose name eludes me at the moment) turned around and sent in a miracle shot with right around 47 seconds left to win the Pac-8 title. The Trojans rushed the ice and dogpiled in front of the Oregon goal (including Coach Wilbur)

- This game ended with a similar bench-emptying mob. After Kay missed to seal the Trojan win, Keith casually turned around, took his helmet off, grabbed his water bottle and took a drink. When he turned back around, Clark McClanathan and the rest of the team met him, knocked the goal off of its pegs in the process, and celebrated. "I wish I'd kept my helmet on," said Keith.

- The Sniper of Troy has now officially stuck as Zacuto's nickname. If you hear that one on the broadcast, you'll know who I mean.

- I mentioned Wilbur was having an extended, polite conversation with the referee. After the game I found out that Coach was asking about possibly measuring Ricciardelli's pads to see if they fit regulations. For whatever reason, the referee apparently explained that such a check wasn't possible at the time (I'll try to clarify later). The timing was perfect because it followed an icing call and allowed USC to rest their forwards for a couple of minutes. Brilliant piece of gamesmanship.

- This was another physical game. Noah Comisar hit Bruin Patrick Tyson so hard that the endboard door popped open. I've never seen that at Anaheim Ice before.

- After 4 powerplay goals last night, USC registered none on a couple less chances in this game.

- The Zacuto, Lofthus, Fyrwald line has been broken up to spread the talent around. Zacuto moved off to reunite with Nick Helmer with Mitchell Landsinger centering. Comisar replaced Zacuto on the line.

- Fyrwald and Landsinger's high faceoff percentage was key to victory. Especially Fyrwald's late success on draws in Bruin territory.

- The other Pac-8 game on the night ended in a shootout. Oregon topped Washington 6-5.

- Give UCLA a lot of credit. They had 3 of their top 6 forwards MIA, including the shifty and talented Michael Carder, and a number of their defensemen as well. Despite that they pushed a fully stocked USC team to the brink of elimination from the Crosstown Cup. Sheer heartbreak. On back-to-back nights they have the Cup firmly in their grasp in the third period and let it slip away. Game 5 will be USC's most-anticipated game in the regular season.

Not Today, UCLA: Trojans Rally to Top Bruins 6-4

Hey everyone,

A wild night again for USC Ice Hockey, but in a more positive way tonight/today. Let's get to it: Bruins win the Crosstown Cup with a Game 3 victory over USC. Trojans stave off elimination if they come out on top. With fans packing the Valley Ice Center for the midnight showdown, it was on in a big way.

Period 1

The puck had barely been dropped and USC was already down. Fifteen seconds in, the Bruins struck and made a statement early in the contest. After the Trojans gained some traction things leveled out a bit. Despite numerous chances, Al Ricciardelli stood his ground and on his head to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard. He frustrated Alex Lofthus on several quality efforts from the Jumpin' Junior. Then USC broke through with around 5 minutes to go in the first. Following a play where he unsuccessfully tried to generate a chance 1 vs. 4 (on a powerplay), Ryder Fyrwald atoned the next rush. He entered the zone 1-on-2, but then dropped a pass back to Adam Zacuto who was trailing on the play. Zacuto was denied the top corner by Ricciardelli, but Fyrwald wasn't denied the rebound. Fyrwald's goal tied things at 1 and that's how the first ended.

Period 2

Fyrwald was just getting started. A little more than halfway through, Fyrwald beat Ricciardelli on a shot sent between two Bruin defenseman. That gave USC its first lead of the game. It was the only Ricciardelli mistake of the period. The Bruins would respond in a big way. Zac Tenney took advantage of a misplayed Phil Adams rebound and backhanded the puck around Adams to tie the game. Then, with the period winding down, blueliner Ashton Christian took advantage of a half-screen in front of Adams to give UCLA a 3-2 lead entering the second intermission.

Period 3

5 minutes in, Michael Carder got fancy. One dangle through the neutral zone, another one past a defenseman, and the capper got the puck between Adams legs into the net. A sensational goal, and one that had the Bruins believing that the Crosstown Cup was in their grasp. Not so fast. On a powerplay again, Alex Lofthus put home a third rebound to narrow the deficit. Then Nick Helmer re-earned his nickname on another man advantage with under 9 to go in the period. Justin O'Neill sent a beautiful head-man pass that Helmer corralled and brought in along the far boards with speed. He burned around the backchecking Bruin defense and came across the face of Ricciardelli. Helmer kept going, his stick and puck stayed behind. Ricciardelli didn't have a chance. 4-4. With under 4 minutes left, the Trojan avalanche rolled on. A Helmer rebound was punched in by a goal-hungry Fyrwald for his hat trick. Then it got tense. With 3:19 left, the Trojans took a penalty. But the man advantage for UCLA could not convert. Following a timeout shortly before the powerplay expired, the Trojans rushed up ice. Daniel Vaynter lagged behind. A Trojan turnover turned into a last minute opportunity for the Bruins. A breakout pass hit Vaynter on the tape as he entered the Trojan zone in behind the defense. Alex Schauffhausen did all he could to slow Vaynter down, including hauling him down and causing a massive pileup that slid hard into Adams. When the dust settled, UCLA had a penalty shot to tie the game with 54.6 seconds remaining. Vaynter thought he had Adams beat, but Phil did the splits and kicked the puck away. No goal. The ensuing faceoff was won by USC and taken ahead. Lofthus burned off as much time in the Bruin zone as he could, keeping Ricciardelli from leaving the ice. A sloppy Bruin turnover gave Helmer and Fyrwald a 2-on-0 on the doorstep. Big mistake. With 20 seconds left, Helmer dished it back to Fyrwald for the capper. 6-4, the Trojans the escape Valley Ice Center with their Crosstown Cup hopes intact.

Some news/notes from the exciting game:

- This was similar to Thursday's thriller, except the Trojans actually finished off their opponents this time around.

- The Bruins looked simply dejected as they left the ice. They had the Cup won, and just let it slip away. USC has a chance to break their will tomorrow.

- Now you see what the Trojans were missing? All 6 USC goals were scored by players who were not on the Utah/Las Vegas trip. 5 of the goals were scored by players who weren't on the team until this semester.

- Ryder Fyrwald plays like Nick Helmer, but at least as far as what we've seen of late, the similarities end in how the two score their goals. Helmer's tend to be pretty, showmanship-type tallies. Fyrwald's tend to be grind-them-out, nobody's moving me from the front of this net type of goals.

- Adam Zacuto with three assists on the night, but lost a little of his team goal-scoring lead to Helmer.

- This new Trojan offense has whole 'nother gear. They can score when they need to and have a tiny sense of desperation, as we saw in the last two games.

- The team also has a new physicality. Both sides banged bodies, but USC absolutely laid into the Bruins throughout the game. Coach Wilbur said during the first intermission that he's been looking for that physical spark all year long.

- Deuces wild in the second!!! In the second period, the score was 2-2 during a stoppage with 2:22 left on the clock. Aren't those great?

- I apologize for the sound quality. At Valley Ice Center, they use a digital phone system, which my broadcast box can't handle directly. So in order to get a line out, I had to borrow a rink phone, run my phone line into the phone, and then unclip the handset and plug it into my box. It's an arrangement that worked well in Vegas and has been fine in the past. For whatever reason, the handset cord or phone greatly distorted the audio signal. Things will be clearer (and simpler) tomorrow back at Anaheim Ice.

- Also, Valley Ice Center doesn't have WiFi available, making it hard to keep up with the forums. Sorry for the technical issues McClanathans. I wish I'd have known or I could have sent out scoring updates.

-Adding on top of all of that, the game didn't start until well after 11 pm, making a late start even later. I couldn't even get my gear hooked up until the prior game (CSUN vs. LBSU) wrapped up and their fans dispersed. Really just a rough night, but apologies to those who tuned in early.

Homecoming Heartbreaker: USC Drops Wild One to LMU 9-7

Hey everyone,

Trojans are finally back at home for the first time this semester. With a significantly easier opponent, significantly more talent on the team (Lofthus, Fyrwald, Schauffhausen, Helmer, O'Neill), and a significantly more friendly home rink, a win against LMU should be a slam dunk right? Wrong.

Period 1

Notions of a USC blowout died early Thursday night. Within two and a half minutes, a pair of Dylan Milo rebound goals stunned the Trojans and gave LMU an early advantage. They followed that with Jim McDonald punching in a shorthanded goal on a crazy scramble in front of USC netminder Zack Keith. Finally, after half of a period to shake off a little rust, the wheels on the Trojan bus gained traction. Immediately following another power play, Scott Mason followed up another blast from Dante "the Inferno" Caravaggio with a backhanded putaway tucked into the goal. The momentum continued with a pretty passing play. Fresh out of the box, Ryder Fyrwald cherrypicked by the Lions' blue line. Jason Bush hit him with a pass. The defense collapsed on Fyrwald and forgot all about Adam Zacuto. The Sniper of Troy pulled a Trojan horse maneuver and snuck in behind enemy lines. Fyrwald hit him for a low breakaway. Goaltender Tyler Payne didn't stand a chance. 3-2 LMU. But McDonald seized the momentum back with a breakaway goal of his own to re-extend the lead. 4-2 was the score after a wild first.

Period 2

Whatever locker room speech Coach Wilbur gave USC, it did not appear to have an affect. Minutes into the second, a shot came in from LMU's point. Keith turned it away, but unfortunately for him, two Lions were completely alone, just standing on either side of the crease. Keith made one rebound save before Kevin Keomanee shoveled it home. Two more quick goals had USC in a deep 5 goal hole, down 7-2. With a few minutes left in the second, a great rally began. It started with Noah Comisar punching in his own third rebound. A minute later, Nick Helmer found a Zacuto rebound to bring the Trojans within 3. That's where the period ended.

Period 3

It took until about 11 minutes into the period, but the rally continued. Comisar scored on a sharp angle slapper to bring USC within two. 8 seconds later, Clark McClanathan worked his way into LMU territory. From just inside the near faceoff circle, Clark wristed a seeing eye shot past Payne to bring the Trojans within one. Two minutes after that, Alex Hite sent in a slap shot tipped by Lofthus that appeared to be saved, but just barely squeaked by Payne to tie the game up. Immediately afterward, USC really appeared to take charge. Zacuto and Lofthus came in 2-on-1. Lofthus fed Zacuto perfectly, but Payne somehow kept the puck out of the net. That stopped the Trojans' five-goal rally, and shifted momentum back. With just under 3 and a half minutes to play, Nick Soresi finished off a hat trick on an odd-man rush the other way to get the lead back for LMU. The Lions put the game away with Travis Amick's finish in front with under 2 to go. Despite the 5-goal rally, the Trojans fell short.

Here's some news/notes from the game:

- Looking for a finger to point? The obvious suspect would be Zack Keith. 9 goals allowed on somewhere between 30 and 40 shots.... not a great recipe for success. And certainly Keith had his issues. His rebound control was consistently abysmal and there were a few he'd like to have back to be sure.

- But by and large, the players directly in front of Keith likely had more to do with the loss. The goals LMU was scoring were not unscreened slap shots from the blue line. No, they were mainly odd-man rushes and unattended forwards sitting on the doorstep. On the 5th LMU goal, TWO Lions players were unguarded and unhassled. Keith had his culpability, but where was the defense?

- Part of the confusion may have come from how the defense was organized throughout the game. Returning blueliners Justin O'Neill and Alex Schauffhausen were, until after the second intermission, swapped between defense and forward depending on the period and time. With a mish mash of 5 guys back on defense, there could have been some off chemistry.

- One bright spot was the offense. On a decidedly unlucky night for the Trojan attack, they still scored 7 goals. Lofthus and Fyrwald have not lost a step. Neither has Helmer. The combination of Zacuto, Lofthus, and Fyrwald together is a potent one. Frazier and Adler weren't even in the mix on the night and the forwards were still productive as a group.

- A clarification on what I meant by unlucky in the previous paragraph. Robbed. At least in the second period, and on one occasion, not by the goaltender. On a wide angle shot at net, it appeared the puck crossed the line with the puck under Payne's glove. In sliding to attempt the save, Payne bumped the near post out of place, well after the puck was across. To make it especially clear, Payne lifted his glove and left the puck sitting across the line. Referee waved it off. Even LMU representatives in the booth with me were shocked the goal didn't stand.

- Despite the potent offense, no goals were technically scored on any of the numerous Trojan power plays.

- Zack Keith appeared injured during the second period when a Lion and two Trojans collided on the doorstep. It's a chest injury, but trainer Cindy Bailey deemed Keith fit to play. He'll get a break tomorrow night when Phil Adams steps in.

- 3L-2T-4L-5T-2L. That's not a locker combination, that's the momentum swings of this game in terms of the goals scored in a row.

- Special thanks to Izzy Wilbur for helping me out during the third period. Always a welcome guest.

- USC may have gotten caught looking ahead to Friday and Saturday's games against UCLA. Trojans need both to stay alive in the hunt for the Crosstown Cup.

Right Into a Brick Wall: UNLV Dices USC 8-2

Hey everyone,

Trojans finished off the tail end of a road trip out in Las Vegas against ACHA West-ranked UNLV. The day started at 7 AM and it ended much later. Somewhere in between USC had a game to play.

Period 1

It did not start well. 59 seconds into the contest, leading Rebels' scorer Anthony Vignieri-Greener found a rebound off of Zack Keith's pads and stuffed it home. 90 seconds after that, Christian Bryan beat Keith again to make it 2-0 early. Then things calmed down. Besides Clark McClanathan's ringing crossbar shot, not much happened for USC offensively. The Rebels added a third goal midway through. John Beavers gathered a feed from behind the net and one-timed it home.

Period 2

Then the Trojans seemed to wake up in Vegas. On a powerplay, Jason Bush blasted a puck into the net from the far point. No screen in front, but plenty of daylight behind UNLV goalie Kyle Kimsey. Then Dante Caravaggio struck again..... almost. Skating alone down ice, Caravaggio beat Kimsey, but couldn't quite put it in. It clanged off of the corner of the crossbar and post. Luckily for USC, Cory Adler was sitting on the doorstep ready to finish the goal. That brought the Trojans within a goal, before it all fell apart. Rensmon scored, followed by Vignieri-Greener and two from Michael Zenzola (one of which nearly tore through the net. That put USC down for the weekend.

Period 3

The third period was uneventful goal-scoring wise. Vignieri-Greener finished off his hat trick with a true putaway goal. The teams played to a relative stalemate. But then a little more than halfway through the final period, one of the dirtier plays I've ever seen happened. Adler got in a small shoving match with Zenzola along the far boards. Then Zenzola upped the ante to a level where it simply doesn't belong in the game. He cross-checked Adler in the face. Adler wrapped him up, and the linesmen quickly separated the two. Zenzola got a minor, a major (for unsportsmanlike conduct somehow), and a game misconduct. Adler was fine. Simply uncalled for.

Some news/notes from the game:

- Vignieri-Greener didn't just have a hat trick, he had 6, count 'em, 6 points.

- Player of the weekend honors goes to Dante Caravaggio. He played as one of only four defensemen on the trip, but was still USC's top offensive weapon. He scored 5 goals and nearly added a sixth against UNLV. It also wasn't unusual to see Caravaggio spread out on the ice, making a diving play.

- This Trojan team looks a lot better than they did last semester.

- There's a battle between players and coaches brewing on the bus. Coaches want to watch a selection of movies including "Old School" and "Superbad". The players want to watch "How I Met Your Mother".

- I kept calling the Rebels, Wildcats from time to time. It's not just players who get tired I guess.

- The team is absolutely exhausted from the long trip. They have three games the next weekend. Luckily, they're all in the Los Angeles area.

"Beaten But Not Cowed": Weber State Smothers Trojan Rally 6-4

Hey everyone,

Back in the early days of the Dallas Cowboys when they hadn't won any Super Bowls they had a losing team, but one that would always keep it tight in defeat. The writers at the time would use the phrase "beaten but not cowed." USC fell tonight, but read on and you'll see why this applies.

Period 1

Coming into the game it would be reasonable to expect an offensive shootout with Weber State. Their goalies give up a little under 5 goals a game, but they're still a top team. The shootout was on early. 6 minutes in, Wildcat forward Chris Deitsch beat Zack Keith short side from the near faceoff circle. Adam Zacuto didn't take long to respond. Working into the zone, Zacuto snapped a laser to blocker-side high corner just underneath the crossbar. Another sniper shot, but not gloveside like just about every other one. Leading Weber State scorer Chris Roberts responded on the powerplay. He slapped a shot from the same place Deitsch did earlier in the game. This time, Keith was a good 2 feet out of position. Zacuto tried to top it on the Trojans' powerplay. Right off of a faceoff, he stole the puck, split the Wildcat defense and pulled it forehand to backhand. Zacuto finished it with a lofted backhand that tied the game at 2. Then USC fell behind in the shootout. Off of a blast from the point, Keith gave up a short rebound and slid out of the crease. Szentveri dug it out but gave it right to Deitsch. All Deitsch needed to do was tap it forward just across the line to give Weber State the lead. Then Dane Ludolph came down ie on a break. He made a quick deke and wristed it behind Keith for a 4-2 edge. Not the best period for Keith or the Trojans.

Both teams muddled their way through half of the period before the Trojans got caught back on their heels. After two minutes trapped in their own territory, USC got it clear and tried to change. It didn't work. Ludolph brought the puck right in and fed it over to Avery House. He found daylight between Keith's legs and made it 5-2. Besides Zacuto, the Trojan offense stalled. Keith got back in the game though. After Tim Brownell drew a penalty shot, Keith shut him down cleanly. Given the altitude, lack of skaters, and lack of offense, it would've been understandable if USC folded like an old tent.

Period 3

They didn't. The Trojans slowly started waking up. Although they failed to register a chance on a 5-on-3, the play improved. The small amount of momentum built up from USC's solid play seemed to evaporate after a perfectly executed Weber State 3-on-2. Roberts one-timed a cross-ice feed into the net. But then the effort started paying off. On a 4-on-4, Dante Caravaggio (aka The Inferno) ripped a slap shot through a Cory Adler screen into the back of the net for his 5th goal of the trip. Three minutes later on the powerplay, Zacuto struck again. Working from right next to the near post, he slung a pass across the middle of the crease to an eager Noah Comisar. He wound up and one-timed it into the goal. 6-4 Weber State and USC is now officially on the comeback trail. But despite a healthy amount of chances, the Trojans couldn't break through and finished with a moral victory and an actual loss.

Here's some news and notes from the game:

- This Weber State team beat San Jose State. The Spartans demolished USC last semester. Do the math and you'll see why this was an impressive performance in defeat. It also gives the Trojans optimism for their series against the Spartans later this semester.

- Part of USC's success could be credited to the Wildcats essentially using only 6 forwards for the vast majority of the game.

- Zacuto truly carried the offense on his back. He scored two and assisted on the two he didn't score. The Sniper now has 4 goals on the trip and extended his team lead.

- Max Szentveri had an up-and-down performance. His giveaway in the first that gave Weber State the lead was deadly (and he threw his stick in frustration). After the game, Szentveri said "at least I had an assist". It looked like he was going to fade into the background until the third period came around. Szentveri egged on the booing crowd as USC took the ice for the final frame. He then nearly finished off a low break but drew a penalty in the process. Later in the period, while killing off a penalty, Butters jumped on a point-to-point pass and rushed on a breakaway. Roberts caught up from behind and mugged him. No presence on the scoresheet but another solid performance.

- Scott Mason, for the first time in recent memory, did not take a penalty. Wow. Coach Langille was absolutely shocked and demanded a penalty be added to the scoresheet after the game. No luck.

- Packed arena and a professional-style public address announcer for Weber State. A great atmosphere for college hockey.

- The team will wake up and head out at 7:30 AM. They've got a 4:30 PM start against a juggernaut UNLV club. They are by far the best opponent out of the three. To say USC will be a big underdog is an understatement. However the Trojans do add Justin O'Neill to the lineup as he joins the team in Nevada.

Roll Out the Welcome Mat: Trojans Thump BYU 8-2

Hey everyone,

The Trojans made their way out to Utah and Nevada without a good chunk of skill guys. 9 forwards, 4 defensemen, 2 goaltenders, but a lot of heart. Considering the brutal three games in three cities schedule, the brutal road 12-hour drive, and the brutal competition (two teams ranked in the ACHA West Top 8), it was tough to know exactly what to expect. USC kicked things off in Provo against BYU. It didn't take long to silence the doubts and possible excuses....

1st Period

51 seconds. That's the amount of time it took for the Trojans to prove themselves. Cory Adler fed Dante Caravaggio at the point. Caravaggio wound as far back as he could, and fired a laser clean through everything except the back of the net. 1-0 USC. What a great way to start the semester. The dominant play continued. The defense clamped down on the Cougars' opportunities, and it didn't take long for Adam Zacuto to make his presence known. On a 2-on-1 rush, Zacuto sent a perfect saucer pass over the defender's stick and onto Noah Comisar's. A beautifully placed one-timer later, Comisar had doubled the lead. Just a few minutes later, the Trojans struck again. Frazier moved in one-on-one. A wrist shot was saved by Cougar netminder Brent Taylor. A short rebound popped out and Adler stuffed the puck into the net milliseconds before plowing into it. Then BYU gave USC a man advantage. Big mistake. Caravaggio pinched in by the far faceoff circle and received a feed from Comisar. He pulled the trigger from a wide angle and the puck slipped in for his second of the night. 4-0 Trojans in a statement.

2nd Period

BYU clawed back after the intermission when USC got complacent. But one part that didn't suffer was the amazing defensive play from the four blueliners and goalie Zack Keith. The Trojans killed 3 penalties and another one that carried over from the first period. Keith played great positional hockey and frustrated the Cougar forwards. Then BYU gave USC another man advantage. Same big mistake. Same player making them pay. Caravaggio finished the hat trick with another blast from the point. It deflected off of a BYU defenseman into the net. That was the only goal that period, and it was enough for a gaping 5-0 USC lead.

3rd Period

I mentioned Zacuto made his mark early. He did more than that late. Zacuto was incredibly close to scoring all game. He finally pulled through with a wraparound inside the near post. Heard enough of Dante Caravaggio's name? Too bad. He notched number four with another cannon from the blue line that deflected in traffic. Keith held onto the shutout until 7 minutes left in the game. The Cougars' leading scorer Nick Bartholomew ended it on a scramble in front. A low shot somehow snuck under Keith's pads. The crowd erupted, even though it only trimmed the Trojan lead to 6 goals. USC extended that again when Zacuto finished off a bobbled puck in front for his second of the night. BYU trimmed the lead again on a Mio Aura shot that came through a screen and surprised Keith, but the result was unchanged. An 8-2 final score and a great start to the semester.

Some news/notes from the game:

- Dante Caravaggio had one productive game on both ends of the ice. His effort was apparent in every shift he was on the ice. He shut down the Cougars at every turn and led the team with his hustle. One thing he needs to work on (and maybe the only thing) is his post-goal celebrations. After his third and fourth, he simply shrugged. C'mon Dante, where's the creativity?

- Some players stand out in certain games whether or not they end up on the scoresheet. Despite 8 Trojan goals, Max Szentveri did not end up getting a point. But that's not a reflection on his play. Szentveri received a promotion to the Cardinal line and played with purpose. He nearly scored on several occasions and worked well with Zacuto and Comisar. There just seem to be some games where the switch flips and something clicks for Szentveri. This was one of them.

- There's a new goals leader in town and his name is Adam Zacuto. His two-goal performance leapfrogged him over Nick Helmer 15-14. With Helmer out for the weekend, Zacuto can take a commanding lead in the intra-team rivalry.

- USC's penalty kill was near-perfect, allowing BYU to go 1/8.

- Adler's 3-point performance was impressive given his condition. His injured shoulder kept him from being as physical as he usually is, but Adler fought through it for a solid night.

- Luckily for Cory, his other fight in garbage time at the end of the third period didn't result in a major penalty. Tangled up on the end boards with the Cougars' Mitch Facer, Adler got frustrated and started brawling, getting in a few shots without dropping the gloves. Facer retaliated after Adler landed a good 3 or 4 punches. Both were escorted off the ice. Coach Wilbur breathed a sigh of relief when Adler only received a double minor.

- Elliot Dawson tallied his first career point as a USC Trojan with an assist on Caravaggio's fourth goal. It's great to see someone a player who shows up to so many games to just ride the bench or serve penalties get rewarded for his dedication. Congratulations Elliot!

- The Trojans were aided in this game by the absence of the Cougars' top netminder, who was injured the previous night in a 3-1 against Cal State Fullerton.

- Guess who took another minor penalty for yet another consecutive game? Scott Mason. This one was a roughing call for dumping a Cougar player into his own goalie. I desperately need to find out how many games in a row he has taken a minor in.... Besides that one blip, Mason's play was remarkably solid, generating scoring chances with his power and balance. One BYU player broke a stick on Mason's arm. Ouch!

- The 12-hour bus ride from Los Angeles to Provo consisted of lots of napping and in-ride DVD's like "Team America: World Police", "Don Cherry's Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Hockey", and "How I Met Your Mother".

- Many of the players remarked after the game at how nice everyone in Provo was. Zacuto mentioned that the opposing players and referees were among the nicest he'd ever seen. The penalty box attendants were wishing USC luck in their game tomorrow against Weber State. One parent was kind enough to bring me some water during the second period. Great people.

- Their fans are also incredibly dedicated. Even though the Cougars were down 7-0, the building erupted when Bartholomew broke up Keith's shutout and were just as loud for the second meaningless goal scored by their team. They all sang the school's fight song too. Dedication...

The hard part starts tomorrow, but for now USC can bask in a big win.

So 6-11 wasn't what USC expected for the first half of its 2009-10 campaign, but championships aren't won in November. The Trojans have a challenging schedule ahead, but one that just might prepare them to hoist the Pac-8 trophy in late February.

Two of the Trojans' most painful losses came in tight single-goal losses to their arch-rival.

Semester Prediction

Disclaimer: This prediction is my best guess and represents how I personally expect the team will do based on last semester. It is not what they're capable of doing. Injuries, attendance, and roster changes will have a major impact on the trajectory of this second half.

The Trojans face an absolutely brutal road trip to start off the semester. They'll squeeze out a hard-fought win against BYU before dropping the next two to Weber State and UNLV.

But the long drive won't shake up USC's semester. After returning home, they will beat LMU and sweep UCLA, with all wins by at least 2 goals.

That momentum will stop short in Seattle, where the Trojans will fight hard, but split two close contests with the Huskies.

San Jose State will sweep USC at home, but not run them out of the building like they did earlier in the season. A 3-goal beating and a tight 1-goal loss for the Trojans.

Game 5 of the Crosstown Cup will be dramatic, intense, and in all likelihood, chippy. With a tie game entering the third, the Trojans will finish like a champion and put away a scrappy Bruin team in the third.

In their final tuneup against the 49ers, USC will win in a close one and set up a run for the title.

Can they break Oregon's title run on home ice? I'll leave that prediction for, well... never.

Burning Questions

3) How will the USC blueliners handle the loss of Matt Lewis and only 4 rostered defensemen?

Many possibilities have been kicked around, but a concrete answer hasn't been found yet. The best option may be recruiting more defensive players from campus.

2) Can the Trojans find a winning combination on the Cardinal and Gold lines?

Absences and scoring balance dictated a shuffling of the Adler-Helmer-Zacuto and the Comisar-Mach-Frazier combinations. Expect some tinkering in search of the pairing with the best chemistry.

1) Who will be the starting goaltender for the Pac-8 Tournament?

If the tournament started today, it would likely be Phil Adams, but his lead is not huge. Zack Keith closed the semester strong, and it could easily go either way.

First Half Recap

Hey everyone,

It was a rough first semester for USC, no doubt about it. The Trojans faced a number of challenges with injuries, attendance, and occasionally bizarre circumstances and ended up 6-11.

Here are some high notes, low notes, players, and goals to remember from the first semester.

Best Game of the Semester

This was a difficult decision to make. USC had two imperfect, but truly exhilarating back-to-back road victories. One was a 5-4 slump buster against ASU and a come-from-behind 5-4 shootout win against LMU.

Thinking back on the two games, the Sundevils win gets the edge for a few reasons. One, it was a critical Pac-8 win. Two, it snapped a five-game losing streak. Three, ASU is, with all due respect, a significantly better team than LMU. Four,

Worst Game of the Semester

This was an easier decision. Although the back-to-back losses against UCLA were disappointing to watch as a Trojan, and USC never really seemed present in either SJSU game, none of those 4 losses had as big of an effect on the first half as the clear winner..... the dreaded I-5 Game.

Let me be clear, the result of this game wasn't the Trojans' fault in any shape or form. For those of you who forgot, a jacknifed semi truck blocked the interstate, allowing only the broadcasters and 6 players to make it to the game on time. Cal scored 10 goals in the first period, on the road to an unimaginable, unavoidable upset.

USC got their revenge a few weeks later at home with a 6-1 performance, but the loss threw the Trojans for a loop the rest of the way. They lost 7 of the next 8 games that followed and seemed out of rhythm. The game was jarring and frustrating more than anything else.

Best Goal of the Semester

There were a few candidates for this award.

Nick Helmer's off-the-endboards rebound goal against Stanford was great. Any of Adam Zacuto's penalty shot/shootout goals could count. Alex Hite's goal from outside the blue line in a losing effort was ridiculous.

But none of them were as spectacular as the only USC goal that didn't make it onto the broadcast. Against LBSU, Noah Comisar fed Adam Zacuto as he broke in down the right wing inside the faceoff circle. Zacuto was hauled down from behind, but it didn't affect his shot. From his knees, the "Sniper of Troy" picked his favorite corner - top shelf inside the near post (also known as glove-side high in this case). A spectacular goal.

Offensive MVP

"Handy" Nick Helmer. The freshman leads the Trojans in points and goals (14 scores, I'm too lazy to tally the points but just trust me). He's fantastic with the puck on his stick, but his nose for the back of the net is what really sets him apart. USC is simply better when he's on the ice.

He can't do it alone though. I'm hopeful to see how he fits into the offense when all of the top 6 Trojan forwards are back in action.

Honorable mention goes to Adam Zacuto.

Defensive MVP

Phil "Crazy Legs" Adams. The wily senior is not your typical butterfly-style goalie. He does whatever he has to in order to keep the puck out of the net. Arms, legs, helmet, stick, skate. Sometimes it looks like he's flailing a little bit, just throwing himself in front of whatever he can. Although it might look unconventional, the results don't lie. Adams often faced a barrage of shots from the doorstep, and came through big. He kept USC in games that the Trojans should have been blown out of.

The starting goaltender job is still up for grabs, but Adams made a strong case during the first semester.

Honorable mention goes to Dante Caravaggio.

Tumbling Into the Break: Trojans End Semester With 4-2 Loss to LBSU

Hey everyone,

The Trojans had a rough semester. In 16 games to that point, the team had gone 6-10. But there were signs of hope following a 4-game win streak towards the end. Could this USC team turn things around? A good measuring stick is always the intra-city rivalry against Long Beach State. After splitting the first two, the 49ers and Trojans duked it out Friday to break the tie. USC missed leading scorer Nick Helmer and energy forward Clark McClanathan. So how did things shake out?

Period 1

Simply put, this was a bad period of hockey. Not for any one particular team (although the Trojans didn't look great) but just as a whole. The two teams combined for a modest 15 shots during the period. The 49ers failed to convert on 3 powerplay opportunities, but did make starting netminder Phil Adams work a little bit. Adams was solid and occasionally spectacular in shutting down the 49ers attack. For its part, USC's offense struggled to find any sort of rhythm.

Period 2

But then things heated up in a flash. Both teams left the locker room and skated hard. The 49ers struck first. Following a shorthanded USC rush that fizzled, LBSU broke back the other way. Defenseman James Robelotto set up his fellow blueliner Tanner Woodbury with a pass to the doorstep outside the far post. Woodbury made no mistake and beat Adams to make it 1-0. The Trojans struck back in relatively ugly fashion. LBSU keeper Alex Miklovic made a tight save off of USC center Mitchell Landsinger . The rebound sat in a scrum in the low slot underneath a bunch of bodies including Trojan Zane Claes. First-year Trojan Max Ernst dug the loose puck out and barely got it across the line to tie the game. It was his first career goal and point. Although USC kept the pressure on and outplayed LBSU, the 49ers would have the last laugh in the period. Robelotto sent a big slapshot from the near point that went cleanly through traffic and into the net. Adams never saw it as 49er forward Joe Nalley was standing completely in front of him. 2-1 LBSU after 2.

Period 3

Early in the third, the 49ers tried to douse USC's hopes of a comeback. Blueliner Nick Kemp blasted a shot past Adams to double their lead. The Trojan offense hearkened back to its performance in the first period and looked stuck in the mud. Adams continued to play remarkably and finished the day with 37 saves. With under 3 minutes to go in the game, though, Adam Zacuto and Cory Adler lifted Trojan aspirations with a well-timed goal. Zacuto worked his way out of the far corner boards and nearly stuffed home a low shot. The rebound settled on Adler's stick in the slot and he roofed it into the net. The newfound momentum soon collapsed though. USC pulled Adams with 1:42 remaining, lost the ensuing faceoff, and gave away the clear that followed. That allowed Joe Nalley to finish off the game with an empty netter into the middle of the goal. Game over, 4-2 49ers.

Here's some news/notes from the game:

- Shots tell the story of this contest. USC was outshot in the first period, held the edge in shots in the second period, and was demolished in the third period. 40-28 was the final count in favor of LBSU.

- Adams had another solid performance in the losing effort. I was surprised to see him starting over Zack Keith as they'd consistently taken turns all season. However, Coach Wilbur cleared up any depth chart concerns during his first intermission interview. Keith sat because his new, legal, pads were not quite broken in yet. Wilbur is pleased with both keepers and I have to agree.

- The consistent problem for USC wasn't necessarily what it did to get into the offensive zone, but what it was trying to do to get out of their own defensive zone. A sloppy breakout muddled things all night for the Trojans. The forwards and defensemen were consistently not on the same page when it came to getting the puck out. LBSU's edge in physical play didn't help either.

- Dante Caravaggio played one of his best games of the season in a losing effort. He was solid positionally, and sparked the team with his hustle. The assistant captain provided at least a quarter of USC's shot total for the game, and used his speed and hard shot to get draws deep in 49er territory, even when he entered the zone 1-on-3. His worst play of the game came following Adler's goal. When asked by the referee who assisted on the tally, Caravaggio forgot Zacuto's number (18) and told him Max Ernst's (16) instead. I guess that shows you how tenuous of a thing stats are in the Pac-8.

- A fond farewell goes out to Matt Lewis. This was the Trojan defenseman's last game in a USC uniform. In addition to being solid defensively, Lewis was also never afraid to show some offensive skill and versatility this season. As a converted forward for one of the games this year, he tallied a pair of assists. He's a classy individual and a champion player. I'm sorry he couldn't go out on a win.

- Scott Mason received a promotion onto the Gold line with Zacuto and Adler. He responded by, well, doing what he always seems to do... taking a penalty. This one came in the first period on a hit from behind in front of the Trojan bench. Coach Wilbur expressed his frustration with Mason's propensity for heading to the box during the first intermission. If he can keep out of the box, he is one of a handful of physical USC forwards that can make an impact on the game.

- 49er captain Joe Nalley is a pesky, pesky player. He's a big-time talker, who loves to stir things up after the play is over. His skill, though, is undeniable. Nalley scored the empty netter and got an assist on the first goal of the game. He practically earned a second for his work in front of the net on Robelotto's goal.

- I appreciate all of the kind words and congratulations from everyone on receiving the Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship.

- Andrew Magne made his play-by-play hockey debut during the second period with former Trojan broadcaster Dave Foley looking on. Past, present, future, perhaps? Andrew did well despite some initial butterflies.

Snapped: USC's Win Streak Ends in 3-1 Loss to LBSU

Hey everyone,

Trojans were on a solid 4-game winning streak and looking to make it 5 against an LBSU team that they'd just edged out the night before. But they'd have to do it shorthanded. USC missed Jason Bush, Coach Wilbur, and Josh Frazier. Cory Adler was fighting through a foot injury that hindered him throughout the game. Facing all of that and a raucous LBSU crowd, the Trojans had a tough task for the night.

Period 1

At first, USC seemed up to it. Phil Adams started off what would turn out to be a remarkable performance with a shutout first period. Offense was hard to come by in general for the Trojans, but a powerplay midway through the period was just what the doctor ordered. Dante Caravaggio sent a pass over left wing for Noah Comisar. He broke into the zone, and then sent a cross-ice pass onto the stick blade of a marked Adam Zacuto. As he was hauled down, Zacuto still had the presence of mind to snipe the glove-side high corner from his knees. Simply ridiculous. 1-0 Trojans after 1.

Period 2

The lack of personnel was bound to catch up to USC at some point though. The Trojans ran out of gas in the second period and the 49ers made them pay. On a 5-on-3, James Robelotto finished a cross-crease pass to tie the game up 1-1. The score stayed knotted at 1 for a good chunk of the period, but only by virtue of the skill of Adams and the luck of early referee whistles. On at least two occasions, loose pucks were sent into the net moments after the official blew the play dead. The luck, however, would even out. On another man advantage, the 49ers caught a bit of a break. A shot from the point came wide of a screened Phil Adams. Unfortunately for USC, Adams never saw the original shot and simply went into a butterfly position and waited for a shot to come. The loose puck settled behind the net. LBSU's Sean Hoang noticed the frozen Adams and wrapped the puck around the far post and into the goal. The Trojan offense meanwhile was stuck in the mud the whole period, unable to break cleanly into 49er territory. 2-1 LBSU after 2.

Period 3

Adams continued his monster play in net, but unfortunately for USC, the best defense did not amount to any offense. Shots were still hard to come by for the Trojans. Running a shortened bench, the team looked flat tired. The game remained close down the wire, but eventually USC's time ran out. With Adams on the bench for the extra attacker, Sean Hoang gathered a dump in off of the end boards and stuffed it home from the crease. That sealed the game with 17 seconds left, and the Trojans win streak ended in a 3-1 loss.

Some news/notes from the game:

- Nobody can blame Phil Adams for the loss. He kept this game from turning into a rout by using every inch of his body and pads to keep pucks from going behind him.

- Frustration with the refereeing from Friday's contest bled over into Saturday's game. During the third, USC was put shorthanded 5-on-3 when Coach Langille argued a little too colorfully for the referee's taste and gave the Trojans a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.

- The forwards struggled in general, but kudos to both Cory Adler and Mitchell Landsinger. Adler, as I mentioned, played through pain the entire night. Landsinger was his usual aggressive, hard-skating self. They both played well in defeat.

- Scott Mason sat for two once again. Without the scoresheet handy in front of me, I believe it was a holding call in the first period. Mason has got to play more disciplined hockey if he wants the ice time to show off his underrated goal-scoring ability.

- Right after Adams got run during the third period, Matt Lewis protected his goaltender very literally. He threw a 49er down to the ice. Lewis definitely got his money's worth on that minor penalty.

- This loss struck me as very different from the 9 others this season. The Trojans have a great locker room camaraderie going. It just look like they got beaten by a hungry LBSU team and their own exhaustion. They'll have two weeks to rest up before their final game of the semester against this same LBSU team.

Messy But Satisfying: USC Edges LBSU 3-2

Hey everyone,

Trojans entered this game on a 3-game tear. They faced a tough task against a bipolar 49ers team. One that lost to Cal State Fullerton but split with San Jose State. The Trojans swept this team in two games last year, but a lot changes from season to season. As a now determined team, here's how they handled the test:

Period 1

USC made a statement early, scoring just a few minutes into the game. Breaking into the zone with linemate Nick Helmer, Cory Adler found a loose puck off of Helmer's stick. Adler sent a sliding wrister through traffic from the high slot. It found daylight just inside the near-side post to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The rest of the period was all Long Beach State in every important area but the scoreboard. 49er Sean Hoang cherrypicked for a good chunk of the period. It nearly paid off twice as he had two clean breakaways in on USC netminder Zack Keith. The Trojan goalie stoned Hoang on one, and Keith's best friend, the crossbar, rejected the second. Keith played a fantastic first, but the 49ers eventually broke through with under two minutes to play. A shot from the point by blueliner Nick Kemp deflected in front onto the stick of Bradley Roberts. The LBSU forward made no mistake, firing a quick wrister just under the crossbar to knot the game at one goal apiece. USC could have easily been trailing by two if not for Keith.

Period 2

USC looked much better this period, evening the scoring chances and breaking up offensive movement from the 49ers in the neutral zone. The Trojans were rewarded midway through the second, this time on a powerplay. Adam Zacuto cycled the puck to Jason Bush at the center of the point. He fired a slapshot through heavy traffic in front of goaltender Ricky St. Louis. It appeared to deflect downward and squeezed through St. Louis' five-hole into the net. Mitchell Landsinger claims to have tipped it, but Bush was credited with the goal. The biggest moment for USC, however, came later in the period. Adler rode a retreating 49er defenseman hard into the boards behind his own net. The referee (much more on the referee coming) ruled it a 5-minute major for Checking from Behind. With a lot of time to kill, the Trojans then gave everyone in the building a clinic on how to penalty kill. USC held the 49ers to only 1 shot on the entire 5-minute advantage and LBSU barely entered the Trojan zone the whole time. Penalty killers broke up passes in the neutral zone and sent them down ice time and time again. Pucks that did enter USC territory were quickly turned away. It was playing shorthanded at its very finest. Trojans headed to the locker room with a 1 goal edge.

Period 3

This was an insane, complicated, and downright bizarre period of hockey. The whistle never seemed to stop blowing for one reason or another. In total, 15 penalties and a penalty shot were called in that 20-minute span. The most insane sequence came midway through the period. During a stoppage of play after a Trojan was sent to the penalty box, 49er captain Joe Nalley asked the referee to measure Zack Keith's pads. He claimed they were too wide for regulation size. They were. Keith was removed the game and USC was assessed a minor penalty for illegal equipment. Phil Adams came in off the bench absolutely cold to replace Keith. To make matters worse, Coach Wilbur asked assistant captain Dante Caravaggio to ask the referee to measure St. Louis' pads. Because his were regulation size, the Trojans were given another minor penalty, this time for delay of game. That gave LBSU a full two-minute 5-on-3 advantage with another full powerplay to follow if they couldn't score on that. Trojan penalty killing was good in the game.... but not that good. Less than a minute in, the 49ers cashed in with Nalley finishing a feed across the crease to the doorstep. The one-timer tied the game up. A penalty on LBSU helped USC kill the rest of the time.

Then the referee evened things up. With the Trojans already on a man advantage, a shot came into the crease. It was saved by St. Louis and the rebound was covered. Unfortunately for Long Beach, it was covered by defenseman Nick Kemp in the crease. Automatic penalty shot. Kemp hated the call and argued his way straight into the penalty box for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Although Zacuto was surprisingly stuffed on the penalty shot (more on that later), but the Trojans had an extended 5-on-3 anyway. With less than ten seconds left in that 5-on-3, "Handy" Nick Helmer lived up to his nickname. He found open space to drive to the net from the near boards. St. Louis positioned himself to block out the near side of the goal. Helmer cruised around him and sent a backhand home to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead. After scoring, he went flying in the air horizontally a la Bobby Orr. A great moment. On the other end, Adams finished the great performance Keith started. He made his usual complement of sprawling saves to preserve the USC lead. Making some truly miraculous point blank saves. With 17 seconds left in the contest, Helmer had a chance to cap the game with an empty net to shoot at and the puck on his backhand inside the 49er blueline. He elected not to shoot, but to instead draw the penalty. He got the penalty, but didn't seal the game. Off of the draw in their zone, LBSU came streaming in with a chance to tie it. A shot from near the bottom of the far faceoff circle appeared to go in for a split second, but just hit the outside of the net. A draw with one second left in the game was won by USC and sent down ice to preserve the 3-2 win. A great way to get your fourth straight.

Some news/notes from the contest:

- Both Trojan goaltenders deserve praise for a great combined effort. That first period could have been a bloodbath of goals, but Keith stood his ground. Adams came in cold and extinguished 49er dreams of a road win. Impressive performance from both men.

- Cory Adler was an asset and a liability in the game. He took 9 penalty minutes, but scored a key first period goal. That type of physical, aggressive play, though, is Adler's signature. Hard to ask him to change when he's having success offensively and clicking with Helmer.

- I may have jinxed Adam Zacuto. Before he took his penalty shot, I mentioned how he was perfect in his career on penalty shots up until that point. He pulled his usual slow approach, backhand-to-forehand gloveside high corner move, but didn't get as much lift as he usually does. St. Louis, to his credit, read the play perfectly and shut Zacuto down. I would have bet a big chunk of money that he would have come through in that situation. Luckily for the team his scoring rival and former linemate Helmer came through shortly after. In any case, Zacuto didn't have a bad night, notching two assists.

- I mentioned the sharp number of penalties in the third period. Adding to that delay, both teams spent their timeouts. That third period never seemed to end.

- Speaking of penalties, 28 penalties and 1 penalty shot were called during the course of the game. The scoresheet only has room for 30 spots to be recorded.

- Watch out for LBSU captain Joe Nalley in Saturday's game. He seemed to be involved in shoving matches after just about every whistle in the third period. There is a lot of bad blood between Nalley and the Trojans. With a raucous home crowd egging him on, I wouldn't be surprised to see tempers flare.

- In his second to last home game ever, Matt Lewis is playing fantastic hockey. He was incredibly active in the game,

- Josh Frazier is sick again. Poor guy has been under the weather forever!

- Scott Mason took his requisite one penalty for the game in the second period.

- Mitchell Landsinger is playing with passion, especially shorthanded. I fully expect him to get a shorthanded goal before this season is done (he had one last season against San Diego State).

- The message boards were incredibly active for this game (41 posts, holy cow!!!). One of the big points of contention was my "bias" against Zack Keith. Let me address this. First off, I think the world of Keith as a person. He is a great guy with an awesome sense of humor (deadpan style). I've carpooled with the guy several times. Entering the season I had him tabbed as the clear starter.

But let me be clear, I am no homer. I am a journalist. If I call something happening on the ice, you'd better believe it's as close to the reality of what is happening on the ice as I can possibly get it. If a Trojan makes a bad play, I'll let you know about it just as surely as I'd bring you a good play. I think that's the only true way I can genuinely bring a listener to the game. From what I (and others who travel with the team) had seen prior to last night's game, Phil Adams has been, simply put, the better goaltender for USC. Although both had struggled with rebound control, Adams had kept more pucks out of the net on a consistent basis, and in most cases, in situations in which he had no business making any kind of a save. Keith had been solid but not spectactular, including giving up a goal from the red line.

The stats backed me up... Prior to the LBSU game, here are the season stats on the two netminders:

Phil Adams - 4.66 GAA, 86% save percentage

Zack Keith - 5.55 GAA, 79% save percentage

That's not huge, but it is an edge in both categories. I'll say it again, I am a journalist. I'm calling it like I see it out there, not one direction or the other. That all being said, Keith had a heckuva game last night and I'm excited to see if he can build on it.

- A funny piece of broadcasting at the end of the game. Andrew mistakenly called Phil Adams... John Adams. I joked that he was thinking of the beer and got confused. To my knowledge, there is no beer called John Adams. There, however, was a president called John Adams. I meant Sam Adams. Whoops! I'm sure my parents are proud.

- These two teams play out the rest of the semester. Another one Saturday (tonight) and another two weeks from yesterday.

Should be an exciting game, but what a great win for USC!

Foot on the Throat: USC Rolls Stanford 8-2

Hey everyone,

The Trojans won their last two in dramatic fashion. Basement-dwelling Stanford was in town. This USC team needed a blowout win to show that they can finish off teams.

***FULL GAME AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS***

Period 1

USC looked good, but not great, to open the game. After a sluggish five minutes to start the game, Adam Zacuto woke the Trojans up with a perfectly placed top corner goal from the slot. Then, USC simply got opportunistic. Stanford goalie Sam Bowers was unable to control a shot from Matt Lewis at the point. Scott Mason jumped on the juicy rebound and made it 2-0 Trojans. The USC defense felt confident with Phil Adams in net and didn't allow a whole lot of chances.

Period 2

USC came out sluggish in the second and nearly paid the price. Adams was incredibly sharp in making reflex pad saves and last-second shoulder saves. He got a bit lucky when a sure Stanford goal was disallowed because it came after the whistle. The Trojans again showed a nose for golden opportunities midway through the second. On the powerplay, Dante Caravaggio blasted a shot from the blue line. Bowers made the save and appeared to have control, but Nick Helmer poked an apparently slightly loose puck into the net to make it 3-0 USC. Adams stood strong, but the shutout was not to be. A one-time Stanford shot from Pitch Lindsay appeared to be saved by Adams, but he was too far back in his net and the puck trickled over the line to cut into USC's lead. Coach Wilbur was frustrated with the Trojans' lackadaisical play and implored them to finish off the Cardinal.

Period 3

And that's exactly what USC did. Zacuto got it started with a fantastic defense-splitting move that got him in alone on Bowers. Zacuto finished off the breakaway as he always seems to, making it 4-1. Stanford responded with a controversial goal. On the man advantage, Adams made an initial save, but the puck kicked out to a Stanford forward. He fired at the empty net, and the puck looked and sounded like it hit the crossbar cleanly and pop out. According to the referee it was in the goal, trimming USC's lead to two goals again. It wouldn't stay that small for long. On the Trojans' next ensuing powerplay, Zacuto threw a puck into the crease. It squeaked loose from Bowers and Landsinger, who was right on top of the goalie, scored the goal. The next powerplay, Nick Helmer wasted no time. On the faceoff to start the man advantage, Helmer worked through the Cardinal defense and fired a puck wide of goal. It hit the endboards sharply and came back just barely in front. Helmer followed his own rebound and punched in the weird angle shot to make it 6-2 USC. Charlie Mach came in on a 2-on-1 with Max Szentveri and elected to shoot, beating Bowers cleanly. Looking for the hat trick, Zacuto broke in with Frazier 2-on-1. Although Zacuto had a very good chance at scoring himself, he made the unselfish play by hitting Frazier back door with a perfect pass. Frazier hit the empty net to make it 8-2 Trojans. They beat the living daylights out of the Cardinal in that third period.

Some news/notes for the Trojans:

- Zacuto and Helmer each had two goals tonight and are jockeying back and forth for the team lead in goals. Helmer currently holds a 13-12 edge and earned his 13th (see the third period recap). You can tell there is a very healthy rivalry between the two talented forwards.

- The two forward lines have been shuffled around again despite increasing chemistry. Coach Wilbur is looking for more scoring balance. Here's how he's going to do it... Cardinal line - Helmer, Adler, Frazier. Gold line - Zacuto, Comisar, Mach. This should further foster the rivalry between Helmer and Zacuto as they look to lead their respective lines to scoring proficiency.

- Phil Adams had another solid start. Both goals scored against were very close to being non-goals (one arguably should have been), but he continues to use his reflexes to make incredible saves. His play kept Stanford from keeping the game too close.

- Stanford made my job incredibly hard tonight. They lost their jerseys in transit and played with some players having numbers taped onto their back and others with blank practice jerseys.

Nearly any mention of a Stanford player save for the goalie could have been completely inaccurate.

- Elliot Dawson was rewarded for his diligence in practice and long games on the bench with some ice time with the first line. Dawson parked himself in front and nearly scored twice in the first period. In the third he had a funny moment where he fell out of the Trojan bench trying to come on for some powerplay time.

- James Anderson got absolutely robbed playing a similar role to Dawson's for USC. Helmer fed him a perfect pass in front of the net. Anderson appeared to make it 8-2 with a shot into the empty net. But hold on! The net was slightly off it's moorings and the goal was waved off.

- It was Andrew Magne's first game as a color commentator. The kid from Edina, MN knows his hockey. Great to have him on board.

Big games against Long Beach State next weekend. Should be exciting.

Comeback Kids: Trojans Win 5-4 Shootout Thriller

Hey everyone,

USC was back in Southern California after a split in the desert. I'd speculated that last week's 5-4 win was a turning point in the season. With Coach Wilbur back behind the bench, the Trojans looked to keep it going against the rising Loyola Marymount Lions. Here's what happened:

Period 1

The Trojans night got off to a simply crazy start. Although 4 lines of forwards and every skating player but Mike Gawlik was present and accounted for, USC was missing a major piece... Goaltenders. Just like during "The I-5 Game", Adam Kwon was the only goaltender to make it to the arena to start the game. Phil Adams was out sick. Zach Keith's car broke down, delaying him 2 hours. Kwon started the game, his second EVER as an ice hockey goaltender. USC rallied in his defense this time. Just under 4 minutes into the game, Nick Helmer intercepted an errant pass and beat Lions goalie Collin O'Malley for a 1-0 Trojan lead. 18 seconds later, Charlie Mach hit Joshua Frazier on a backdoor play in front of O'Malley to make it 2-0. The Lions came roaring back. On a scrum in front, David Morris shoved a puck behind Kwon. Then, blueliner Bobby Arnold shot a puck from the far boards that snuck by Kwon to tie the game. The third string netminder rallied, however, making an unbelievable skate save on a shot from the slot. He let in 2 goals on 10 shots. Score tied 2-2 after 1.

Period 2

Keith arrived a little ways into the second period and dressed as fast as he could. The Trojans held for 11 and a half minutes and were about to make the switch during the next stoppage of play as Keith had just gotten ready. But he was just a little too late... Off of a shot wide of the near post, the puck rebounded in front to Jim McDonald, who made no mistake and sent it behind Kwon. Enough was enough for the Trojans and Kwon left the ice with USC in a 3-2 hole. The Lions would extend that. During the late stages of a USC powerplay, a puck passed to the point was intercepted and taken on a breakaway by Chris Mallaber. He juked around a cold Keith, and doubled the Lions' lead heading into the second period break.

Period 3

With more security behind them in goal, the Trojans rallied back. On a 5-on-3, Matt Lewis sent a shot on goal. O'Malley made the save, but the puck somehow popped up over his head and landed behind him before squirting over the line. A weird goal, but a crucial one that gave the Trojans more than 7 minutes to find the equalizer. That tying goal came on another interesting play down low. Under two minutes to go and the makeshift Cardinal line on the ice (Adler, McClanathan, and Helmer), with the puck tangled up down low. Adler tried a wraparound on the near post. O'Malley stoned him, but was caught up in the play. The loose puck was pulled away by McClanathan and passed for Helmer. "Handy" Nick Helmer then scored a wraparound goal inside the far post to tie the game up late. McClanathan was so fired up that he acted like he had scored (confusing me after I initially said Helmer scored it). The game went into overtime.

Overtime

Chances for both teams, but both netminders were strong. Read about an interesting refereeing play in the news/notes section. Still deadlocked, the game went into a shootout.

Shootout

The Trojans chose Adam Zacuto, Joshua Frazier, and Nick Helmer as their three shooters (NOT FIVE as I erroneously said on the broadcast). The Lions countered with David Morris, Chris Mallaber, and Jim McDonald. Zacuto proved again why he is USC's best penalty shot taker. Working in slowly, he pulled the puck back towards the goaltender's glove side and sniped the top corner. It's worked every time I've seen it and Zacuto says he is 7-7 lifetime with that move. Morris beat Keith with his move, but lost the puck off of his backhand before he could stuff it home. Next up, Frazier pulled a sweet move on O'Malley. He faked the wrist shot to freeze the goalie, then dragged it towards the near post before sliding the puck 5-hole between O'Malley's pads. Mallaber kept the Lions in the shootout by juking Keith and scoring on a sweet move in from the far boards. Helmer missed his chance to finish the game as the puck rolled off of his stick last second. Mcdonald's final chance hit the side of the net. USC mobbed Keith (even though he didn't have to make an actual shootout save) and the Trojans had sealed their second in a row in dramatic fashion.

Some news/notes from the game:

- "Handy" Nick Helmer added to his great season with bookending goals. Both showed his fantastic hockey instincts and clutch play. His second saved the day for USC. Helmer has regained the team scoring lead from Zacuto. On the scoresheet, he was credited with the winning shootout goal (incorrectly).

- Officially, this may go in the books as a tie. Any of these non-conference games are technically supposed to end in a tie, but both teams agreed to play it out for the fans. Strangely (and against ACHA rules), both teams skated the overtime session with 5 skaters instead of 4. On the official scoresheet, it gives USC a 3rd period goal with 1 second remaining. Bizarre, but I'm sure the Trojans at least feel like it was a win and LMU feels like it was a loss and that may be what counts.

- An interesting play came late in the overtime session. While Trojan forwards were offsides but retreating, Alex Hite blasted a puck from outside the blue line on goal. O'Malley made the save and left the puck for his defenseman who skated ahead. But the whistle blew with the linesman signalling intentional offsides. The draw initially came deep in Trojan territory, before the officials conferred and moved it to center ice (known in some referee circles as "The Circle of Shame" because blown calls faceoff from center). Although Lions fans were absolutely furious, this was absolutely the right call. The NCAA rulebook (the same one used in the ACHA), states in Section 36, A.R. 6 that play should continue without the offsides being called. If Hite had scored, the goal would have been disallowed. Everyone seems to criticize the officials for doing a bad job, but this was great refereeing.

- Coach Wilbur is back and you can see the difference. USC's forechecking was unbelievable in this game. LMU's breakout went nowhere and the Trojans created a lot of chances through pressure. The energy Wilbur brings is a huge X-factor and should inspire the team to keep playing well.

- I'm still loving what I'm seeing from that Gold line, but it may be broken up for a period of time. Late in the first, Noah Comisar took a hit in his own zone and hobbled to the bench. He skated a couple of more shifts during the course of the game, including one as late as the third, but couldn't continue. The Trojans shuffled everything around, moving McClanathan up to the Cardinal line and moving Zacuto down to the second. Not sure on Comisar's status.

- Scott Mason is frustrating the coaches by taking stupid penalties. Tonight's came in the offensive zone off of the play. It looked like Mason got caught retaliating. One of the coaches told me a couple of weeks ago that Mason seems to take a penalty every time he touches the ice. Hard to disagree.

- These two clutch wins back to back make it clear to me that USC is back, has turned the corner, and the rest of the Pac-8 should be scared. Under most circumstances, including the San Jose state and Pac-8 semifinal game last season, the Trojans would have folded and failed if they had to play Kwon for half of a game. Instead they rallied behind him tonight and won the first overtime/shootout game since Dante Caravaggio beat Long Beach State in Anaheim Ice early last year. Watch out, this Trojan team is finding it's stride on the ice and in the locker room.

A Win is a Win: Trojans Snap Losing Streak With 5-4 Win Over ASU

Hey everyone,

If ever USC needed a win it was in this game. They had a nearly intact roster but needed to break up a 5-game losing streak to show themselves and the rest of the league that they hadn't faded off of the Pac-8 contender map. Before the game, the team was confident that they could get a huge road win. Here's what happened:

Period 1

Perhaps the most key decision beyond anything else in the game was giving Phil Adams the start in net. Adams played a simply ridiculous 1st period. One-timer from the crease? No problem. Breakaway chance? No worries. Adams helped weather the Sun Devils early storm. That allowed the offense to take advantage of ASU goaltender Andrew Horine. Midway through the period, Helmer threw a cross-ice pass up to the near point to Alex Hite. The defenseman sent a sliding wrister along the surface of the ice that glided past Horine inside the near post. Later, Jason Bush fired a shot from the point that missed cleanly, but bounced straight back off of the end-boards onto the stick of Helmer. "Handy" Nick Helmer finished it off with a rainbow-style shot that flipped over Horine into the goal. Then, with 13.8 seconds left in the period, Joshua Frazier found a Charlie Mach rebound and launched it top shelf to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead heading into the break. The Devils swapped goaltenders during the intermission, bringing in Scott Czarnik. Was USC the best team in that period? Probably not, but they were better where it counted.... on the scoreboard.

Period 2

Early in the period both teams came out with a head of steam. With Mach and Noah Comisar on an odd-man rush, Mach found his linemate with a pass across the low slot. Comisar finished it off to give USC a 4-goal edge. Adams continued to stand on his head almost literally, looking great even when ASU scored late in the second. He made the first two initial saves, was sprawled out on the ice long enough for the Sun Devils' Moore to finish off a goal in the top half of the net. We would hear from him again later....

Period 3

ASU had chance after chance on the powerplay for the first half of this period, but Adams and the defense held strong on the penalty kill. Eventually though, the powerplay came through for ASU. With around 6 minutes left, Moggel got a puck at the near point, and hit a slap shot towards goal. It pinballed off of several players in front and into the net. 4-2 was the score. However, two Devils penalties with 4:00 left killed off ASU's momentum. Although the Trojans couldn't score on the 5-on-3, they scored right after. Matt Lewis hit a slapshot towards goal with 1:34 left that was tipped in by Frazier for his second goal. The three-goal lead with little time remaining seemed to seal up the game. Not so. With the goaltender pulled, Joe Moore scored two goals 15 seconds apart for his hat trick. The second one left 48 seconds on the clock. Saeger had a chance to be the hero on a low breakaway, but Adams barely kept it from going through his 5-hole. It came down to the last second, but USC held on for an immeasurably huge win. As I said on the broadcast and after the game, an unnecessarily exciting victory.

Here's some news/note from the game:

- This one stat tells the story of how Phil Adams won the game for the Trojans. 56-34. That's the shot count for each team. ASU had the 56. USC had 34. Phil had 52........ 52 saves that is. He was absolutely unreal... He made saves with every part of his body he could, twisting, contorting, diving, doing everything he could to keep pucks out. These were not easy saves for Phil but he came through. Funny enough, he was up until 4:30 AM the night before and slept in until 3:30 PM today. Adams gave me a huge bear hug after the game.

- Speaking of late night antics... for a period of time last night, Adams, Keith, and Adam Kwon (all three Trojan goaltenders) were in the same bed watching Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

- Joshua Frazier had a clutch performance. His two goals came with less than two minutes left in the first and third periods. He had the game winner and spent the whole game in the right place at the right time. A great performance from him in his second game back on the ice.

- That second line Frazier was on looked very very good. They were responsible for 3 of the 5 Trojan goals and really seemed to be clicking. Comisar and Mach have always seemed to have chemistry (Mach had great hustle this game as well), but Frazier really completes it all as a big scoring threat.

- Michael Gawlik had a bad second period. He took 3 penalties, the last of which ASU scored on. Gawlik made up for it later with solid defensive play and a lot of big hits.

- There was an interesting situation for USC heading to the locker room after 2 periods. I'm not exactly positive if it was a scratched Division 2 or a Division 1 player, but it was definitely a player associated with ASU that confronted the Trojans. The pink blazer-wearing man jawed at the team before grabbing Scott Mason by the jersey and Jason Bush by the face mask. A scuffle ensued. The assailant was booted out of the arena with apologies from ASU's team president.

- What was the biggest difference in this USC team on the ice tonight that got them the win? Was it more physical play? Better offensive chemistry? Better play in net? All of these helped, but the biggest key was that they simply wanted it more tonight. They played with passion and desire and it got the job done. What a game.

Desert Disaster: Trojans Stumble to 7-2 Loss Against ASU

Hey everyone,

USC entered the night on their second four-game losing streak of the season. Trojan fans had reason to be optimistic entering the night though. With the exception of Max Ernst, the full roster of skaters was ready to go with no DQ's. They were still missing Coach Wilbur (celebrating his birthday back in Southern California), but could they take advantage of a full roster on opposing ice?

Period 1

The answer is absolutely not. Four minutes into the game, ASU notched two goals 24 seconds apart to take an early lead. Alex Moggel and Joe Moore notched the goals for the Sun Devils. The first one came off of a bad Dante Caravaggio turnover (he made up for it later). The second one came on a top shelf shot from the faceoff circle. Moore then added a second one with a nifty move in front to make it 3-0. Charlie Mach chipped away at lead on a nice feed in front by Noah Comisar (assist credited to Jason Bush as well as Comisar). But before the period was done, Heinze scored on an ASU odd man rush after a nice pass from Moggel found him alone. The Sun Devils only had 11 shots in period, but slipped 4 by Zach Keith during a major off-night for the Trojan goaltender. USC had only 2 shots themselves. An awful period of Trojan hockey.

Period 2

No goals in this period, just a couple of controversial no-goal calls that went both ways. The first one went against USC. Joshua Frazier and Noah Comisar came in on a two-on-one rush. Frazier blasted a slapshot that was saved. The rebound landed on Comisar's stick who fired at a relatively empty net. The puck was fired toward the near side of the net, but popped out near the far post. The referee signaled goal two seconds later, but then quickly changed his mind to no goal. Looking at Jeff Lewis' tape, it was certainly unclear what the puck exactly hit. On the other end, Moggel was set up by a beautiful pass down low. He came alone in front of Keith, and sent a low shot in. The puck was slowed by Keith and seemed to squeak backwards. Keith fell backwards on top of it, but it was right by the line. After discussion, the play was ruled no goal. It was certainly a better period for USC, but the deficit was still three goals.

Period 3

The line shows that ASU scored three to USC's one goal.... but one goal tells the story. Breaking out of his own zone, Mike Sasse dumped a puck in from the red line. Some combination of the bouncing puck and generally sloppy play allowed the puck to squeak past Keith. That goal essentially killed off USC's chances as it put them behind 4 goals. The one Trojan goal, by the way, came off of a great effort by Nick Helmer. He fought through three Sun Devils and a high stick, got a puck on goal. The rebound kicked out to Adam Zacuto who finished it off.

Some news and notes:

- Without seeing UW play yet, it's clear to me that ASU is the team to beat in the Pac-8. They have a lot of chemistry, solid defensive play, and a deeper team than Oregon. That showed in their performance against USC tonight.

- The first two lines reuniting was considered a major event. In a poll on this blog, you, the readers of this site, voted that the lack of a complete first line was the biggest factor in the UCLA sweep. The result on the ice at least tonight? Not impressive for most of the game. The first line looked very out of sync until the third period. The second line played better, generating opportunity after opportunity, but struggled to finish off chances.

- I've been saying this all season, but Phil Adams may win the starting slot for good with a big game on Saturday. Keith had a major off night. Yes, all of the goals weren't his fault (blame bad turnovers and odd-man rushes), but the ones that were clearly were. We'll see what Phil can do tomorrow

- Matt Lewis took a heavy hit in front of his own blue line, with his head snapping back against the ice. He was fine, but he had one very concerned fan up with me in the press box. Michelle Lewis was wearing the extra headset, and had her hands over her mouth even long after Matt had skated away. Ahhh, the agony of a hockey parent.

- Clark McClanathan had a nice blocked shot in the third. It didn't hit in an easy spot though, catching him just above the knee. He limped over to the bench, and looks like he'll just have the bruise.

- Max Ernst was out with back spasms.

- This team needs the energy of Coach Wilbur in the locker room. They have yet to win a single game this year without him behind the bench.

- Trojans on a major skid. They're 2-9 on the season now and on a 5 game losing stretch. A road win tomorrow would boost spirits... and believe me they need it.

Sleepless in SoCal: Trojans Wake Up Too Late in 3-2 Loss to UCLA

USC came into the game on a three game losing streak and trying to shake the memory of a 5-4 late night loss to UCLA from the previous night. The good news? They were coming home and added star forward Adam Zacuto and effort player Clark McClanathan. Here's what happened:

Period 1

Zach Keith started the game for USC, but didn't last long, leaving with illness less than a minute into the game (I didn't notice it for a long time). That meant it was up to Phil Adams to carry the load for the second straight night. And also for the second straight night, Zack Tenney scored a goal for UCLA. A few seconds into their first powerplay of the game, the Bruins were tied up off of the draw. Tenney swooped in, scooped up the puck and fired a high wrister from between the faceoff circles. A disallowed goal later in the period kept the hole from getting any bigger.

Period 2

But the team didn't wake up during the intermission. USC had, at most, 3 shots on goal during the second period. It was painful to watch. The Bruins doubled their lead when Michael Carder followed a very short rebound from a tight shot off of Phil Adams and tapped it home during a bullrush at the net. The Trojans entered the second intermission still sound asleep.

Period 3

At least initially, whatever locker room speech Coach Langille gave did not work. A comeback looked highly unlikely. But then came the alarm clock. Speedy Bruin forward Daniel Vaynter came in along right wing on a 2-on-1. Vaynter threw a hard pass that deflected off of a sprawling Michael Gawlik and past Adams. The realization of a 3-0 hole got things going in a big way. Midway through a 5-on-3, Matt Lewis fed Adam Zacuto down at the bottom inside corner of the far faceoff circle. Zacuto waited patiently before snapping a puck through Al Ricciardelli to narrow the deficit. Then, with 3 minutes left in the game, USC came even closer. Jason Bush joined the attack and took the puck behind the Bruin net. He threw one in front to Zacuto who finished off the play right as the net was being dislodged. The goal stood and the Trojans were within a goal. Penalties, however, finished off USC. Nick Helmer went to the box first with 2:13 left in the period. Then Mitchell Landsinger took a double minor with just over a minute remaining. The Trojans applied pressure until the final horn sounded, but couldn't get a quality chance on net with as few players as they had. UCLA walked off of Anaheim Ice with a 3-2 win and a 2-0 lead in the Crosstown Cup.

Some news and notes:

- The Trojans skated 4 defensemen the whole game. They did a reasonable job protecting Adams, especially considering the sheer number of rebounds given up.

- Phil Adams played a great game. His reaction saves and pad saves were simply ridiculous. On a breakaway late in the third, he made a save with his right pad that he had absolutely no business making. The only consistent problem he had was a lack of rebound control. There were a shocking number of pucks just sitting in front of the crease after the first shot.

- Daniel Vaynter scored the game winner for the Bruins and was as good as advertised. He will give plenty of other teams nightmares as this season goes on.

- This was USC's third straight one-goal loss.

The Trojans hit the road next weekend in what should be some tough games against ASU.

Attack of the Bruins: Trojans Lose Second Straight OT Game 5-4

Game 1 of the Crosstown Cup was Thursday night/Friday morning out in Panorama City. USC was coming off of being swept out of their own building by the Ducks. The hope was that the team would turn things around against UCLA. Here's what happened:

Period 1

The Bruins let USC know early on that this was not going to be an easy night. On a powerplay, UCLA captain Neal Parsons launched a shot from the point. It deflected off of some traffic in front of USC netminder Phil Adams and got past him into the net. 1-0 UCLA. The Trojans responded fairly quickly. Faceoff winning machine Mitchell Landsinger stole a puck from Parsons on the penalty kill, broke in alone and tucked it past Bruin goaltender Al Ricciardelli to knot the game up. Then on a powerplay chance for the Trojans, defenseman-turned-forward Matt Lewis took a shot from the doorstep. Ricciardelli partially blocked it, but Scott Mason found the loose rebound and slid it home. 2-1 Trojans entering the period break.

Period 2

The momentum of this period seesawed back and forth. On a Bruins man advantage, Alex Horowitz glid from behind Adams to the front of the net. He then flipped a puck past Adams to tie the game again. Mason answered for USC on a beautiful chemistry play. Max Szentveri dropped the puck back to Lewis who then slid a pass from the near point to the far faceoff circle. Mason gathered it in and scored it. The Bruins tied again on another Horowitz goal and seemed to have all of the momentum behind them. They gained more momentum when Alex Hite hit speedy Bruin forward Nick Panzica face-first into the endboards during a foot race for the puck. Panzica was alright, but Hite received a major penalty and a game disqualification (keeping him out for Friday's game). The Trojan penalty kill stood strong though, handily killing all 5 minutes and heading into the locker room with the tie preserved.

Period 3

USC took the lead for the third time in the game early in the third period. It came on the powerplay once again. Lewis broke in along the far boards, found a loose puck and snapped a top shelf shot past Ricciardelli. The Bruins kept fighting back. Panzica shot another puck through traffic that beat Adams. With the game deadlocked at 4 apiece, both teams had their chances to finish the game in regulation. Adams stood on his head almost literally on a few chances, including some on the breakaway. The Trojans failed to scored on a nearly full 5-on-3. With around 2:30 remaining in the game, Szentveri was cleanly stuffed on a penalty shot. USC also had a powerplay chance for the last 90 seconds of regulation, but couldn't do much. And so, for the second game in a row the Trojans headed to overtime.

OT

The OT period did not last long. With only a minute gone by, Jason Bush took out a Bruin away from the puck and headed to the box on an interference call. Early in the penalty kill, Zack Tenney walked into the Trojan zone along right wing, crept into the slot and beat Adams top shelf. The Bruins poured out onto the ice as they celebrated a hard fought win.

Some news and notes:

- This was UCLA's first win over USC since an essentially meaningless Crosstown Cup Game 5 during the 2007-08 season. The Bruins last Game 1 win in the Crosstown Cup came back during 2005-06. They actually won the first two in that series before USC won the last three.

- USC has a major attendance problem and keeps unintentionally creating excuses for itself. Zacuto, Adler, and Frazier were out for various reasons. That's half of the Trojans' top six forwards right there. McClanathan was out to serve a DQ. Coach Wilbur was in Chinese Taipei on business. It's tough to completely gauge the level of this hockey team right now because it's rarely all together in one game.

- Alex Hite is a huge loss on the blue line. It means that the Trojans have to move Lewis back from forward to defense to even have 4 guys. This is a bit of a shame as Lewis was productive at forward, scoring 3 points in Thursday's game.

- One Bruin who didn't get on the scoresheet but should be a huge factor tonight is Daniel Vaynter. He is speedy, draws penalties and has great instincts. Look for him to give the Trojan defense problems on Friday.

- Make no mistake, the Bruins won the game and certainly were the better team on the ice Thursday. They outshot the Trojans in a major way. If Ricciardelli had been better for UCLA or Adams worse for USC, the Bruins could have easily won by two or more goals.

Should be an exciting game tonight!

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades: Trojans Close But Not Quite in 4-3 OT Loss to the Ducks

Hey everyone,

The Trojans entered this morning's game worn down from a hard game the night before against Oregon with a short bench. Captain Mike Gawlik is out with a Game DQ from the night before, starting center Cory Adler is out with a concussion, 3 other forwards were out with the flu. USC still hit the ice Saturday morning with a chance to end the Ducks' dominance over the last few seasons. Here's what happened:

Period 1

To say the Trojans came out slow in Friday's first period would be an understatement. USC had a much better start Saturday, but still trailed 2-1 after a period. Ducks defenseman Jonah Rice launched a laser through traffic that got by starting goaltender Zach Keith. The Trojans fought back to tie, with blueliner Dante Caravaggio jumping on a turnover and firing a weird angle shot that was tipped by a Ducks defender into the back of the net. Oregon had the last laugh in the period, forcing a rebound try past Keith. The key play in the period, however, happened when top penalty killing forward Clark McClanathan got too aggressive forechecking and sent Oregon starting defenseman Doug Reese face first into the boards. McClanathan was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for his hit. USC's third major penalty of the series, but more importantly the Trojans lost another key forward for the game.

Period 2

Despite giving the Ducks a boatload of powerplay opportunities, the Trojan penalty kill was strong and Zach Keith was even stronger. Keith had his best period of the season, shutting down Oregon on several chances from right on top of his crease. Meanwhile, USC took advantage on it's own powerplay with two goals. Adam Zacuto found a loose puck thrown in front by Nick Helmer and slipped it past Oregon goaltender Chris Takla. Minutes later, Zacuto struck again with another perfectly placed top shelf goal. That gave the Trojans the 3-2 lead entering the third.

Period 3

USC didn't play cautiously in the third and try to sit on the lead, but fairly early in the period, it was gone anyway. On the powerplay again, the Ducks' Bryson Crawford sent a pass that went from behind the USC net, through the crease, to Kevin Trihey at the point. Trihey sent a laser that went untouched past Keith to tie the game at 3 apiece. Despite late chances for both teams, the game went to overtime for the 2nd time in the last four meetings between Oregon and USC.

Overtime

But it simply wasn't meant to be. With 1:30 left in the extra session, the Ducks sent a breakout pass to winger Tyler McCarty who headed into Trojan territory in a hurry. USC would have had Bush and Hite back to stop the play, but Hite got caught heading to the bench in the middle of a change and it was Bush's job to handle McCarty. Bush did his best, forcing McCarty to take a backhanded shot from the near faceoff dot. But that was enough to beat Keith. It squeezed underneath the Trojan goaltender's arm clean into the back of the cage. That gave the Ducks a hard fought 4-3 win and extended their streak. USC came close and put up a stellar effort considering the lack of personnel, but as the saying goes.... "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades".

Here are some other notes from the game:

- Zach Keith had a great performance in the game. He certainly rose to the occasion. Unfortunately, the one goal that could be pointed to as a "bad one" was the overtime winner. The goaltending situation is arguably the most intriguing aspect of the team right now.

- Clark McClanathan did a great job as a color commentator. One of his most interesting insights is hearing how this Trojan locker room is much more together than last year's. Expect that closeness to pay dividends in chemistry and effort as the season goes on.

- This is arguably the best USC has played so far this season... but not necessarily the best team USC has played to this point. If one thing was clear from this series, it's that Oregon is certainly beatable this season. But until the Trojans get that monkey off of their back, the Ducks will hold onto their bragging rights until someone knocks them off of their throne.

- James Anderson's move to forward appears permanent. The big reason cited is his lack of complete comfort on his skates. An understandable move. It will be interesting to see how Anderson adjusts to his new role (his third on the team in less than two full seasons).

- After talking with Trojan trainer Cindy Bailey it appears that Adler can start playing again one week after symptoms of his concussion subside. That may not mean he'll be on the ice against UCLA next Thursday and Friday, but expect a possible return on the road against ASU.

The Trojans have two big games next week against UCLA. For the record and the rivalry, these are clear must-wins. Until then.... fight on everyone!

Two Games in One: Bipolar Trojans Fall to Ducks 6-3

Hey everyone,

Oregon has had USC’s number for the last 3 seasons. Since the Trojans’ dramatic 4-3 Pac-8 Championship victory in 2007 over the Ducks, Oregon has not lost once to Troy. This season, unlike last, the games are in Anaheim. Did it make a difference? Short answer, no. Oh… you want the long answer? Read on.

Period 1

The Trojans must have gone to bed early, because they looked like they were sleepwalking in a devastating first period of play. The game stayed scoreless until first line forward Ian Law gave the Ducks a 1-0 edge a little before halfway into the period. Then the dam broke open… two powerplay goals and another rebound tally by Derek Wolfson gave Oregon a crushing 4-0 lead. Starting goaltender Phil Adams was under absolute siege in the first, facing 24 shots in the frame. Meanwhile, USC’s illness-ridden offense (more on that later) tallied only 3 shots in the entire period. Against San Jose State just three weeks earlier, the Trojans seemed to pack it in facing a similar deficit. But….

Period 2

The Trojans woke up. Just like in the second period of “The I-5 Game”, USC stopped the bleeding without healing the four-goal wound. USC had several close calls, but were shut down by Ducks netminder Jack Barry. A misconduct penalty to Adam Zacuto and a 5-minute boarding major to Max Szentveri kept the USC offense from getting on the scoreboard. Shots in the period were still 13-4 in favor of the Ducks, but that doesn’t reflect the changed Trojan team out on the ice. Coach Wilbur, despite still facing a 4-0 deficit, was pleased with the team’s turnaround.

Period 3

And then the Trojans broke through. Early in the third period, Nick Helmer took a long pass from Alex Hite, blew by the Ducks defenseman, and deked around Barry for the goal. That goal triggered inspired Trojan Hockey for the rest of the period. The offense buzzed around Barry, giving the Ducks defense all it could handle. But then one moment unraveled comeback hopes that evening and seriously hurt USC’s chances the following night. Oregon forward Carter Achilles was skating with the puck in an arc inside of Trojan territory. What happened next is up to who you ask. If you ask my broadcast partner Max Ernst, team video man Jeff Lewis, or defenseman Michael Gawlik, Achilles was laid out with a clean (albeit slightly high) hit. If you ask some of the other Trojans watching from the bench or, more importantly, the referees, Gawlik’s elbow came up and hit Achilles in the head. Either way, it sent Gawlik and Achilles off to the locker room. Achilles with a head injury and Gawlik with a 5 minute elbowing major and a game disqualification (kicking him out for Saturday’s game). Initially, the Trojans kept the energy up starting off the long penalty kill with a nifty 2-on-1 shorthanded goal from blueliner Dante Caravaggio. That narrowed the deficit to 4-2, but then the Ducks finished. They took advantage of their extended man advantage with 2 more powerplay goals. The Trojans kept fighting, with Zacuto scoring on a beautifully executed penalty shot, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Here’s some news, notes and observations from the game:

- This Ducks team does not miss star goalie Wren Arbuthnott as much as you might expect. Jack Barry proved he is a capable successor with some truly unbelievable goals.

- Phil Adams had a chance to take a solid lead in the goaltender battle, but a sloppy first period kept things fairly even with a chance for Zack Keith to make an impression Saturday morning.

- In addition to losing captain Mike Gawlik for tomorrow’s game, first line forward Cory Adler may be absent. Word from the Trojan locker room is that he may have some type of head injury incurred during the first period (possibly a concussion).

- USC is not immune from the flu bug going around campus. Josh Frazier will miss this weekend’s series with a severe flu, while Max Ernst and Scott Mason are both out for similar illnesses. Ernst may play tomorrow, but it remains to be seen.

- As I mentioned during tryouts, Adam Zacuto may have the best penalty shot move I’ve seen. It doesn’t look like much until he brings it onto his forehand at the last second and picks the absolute top corner of the net. Absolutely unstoppable.

- Oregon may have the perfect strategy for handling the I-5. They all came down on one bus straight from Eugene. That way they either all make it or none of them make it. That is one hell of a drive though.

- It’s tough to tell whether Alex Hite or Dante Caravaggio is the best defenseman so far for USC. Hite is arguably more solid defensively, making great plays on the back check and consistently clearing pucks away from dangerous areas. Caravaggio is a gambler to be sure. He plays fast and loose in his own defensive end and loves to hit. Dante also shows no fear in hopping into the attack as evidenced by tonight’s shorthanded goal. Both have devastating slapshots, absolute cannons. Hite sent in some lasers from the red line while Caravaggio is equally dangerous from the point.

Early morning game in Anaheim tomorrow. I’ve got to get some rest or my own version of the flu is only going to get worse.

Revenge!: USC Avenges Earlier Defeat With 6-1 Win Over Cal

Hey everyone,

USC entered tonight with a 4-game losing streak, an 0-1 Pac-8 record, and a lot of guys not quite on the same page. While the chemistry isn't completely there just yet, the Trojans took a big step forward in tonight's game. Here's the recap:

Period 1

USC was looking for a measure of revenge after Cal pasted them 10-1 in the first period under difficult circumstances last time. The result of the first period wasn't as dramatic as the Bears' was, but satisfying nonetheless. Killing off a Matt Lewis interference penalty midway through the first, the Trojans drew a delayed penalty in their own zone and took advantage. Defenseman Jason Bush broke down ice and slipped a puck past Cal netminder Peter Tartaglia for a shorthanded goal and a 1-0 USC lead. Later in the period, on a powerplay of their own, Bush struck again. Pinching in from the point, he sent a perfect pass across the crease to Nick Helmer who couldn't help but finish it off. Minutes later, Adam Zacuto found a rebound between the faceoff circles and wristed an absolute beauty that clipped the crossbar on its way into the corner of the net. A sensational goal that sent USC to the locker room with a cozy 3-0 lead.

That 3-0 lead may have been a little too cozy. The Trojans came out of the room and Cal made them pay. Cal's Wesley Borja waltzed to the front of the net and stuck a puck past Zack Keith. All too easy of a goal for the Bears. The rest of the period went back and forth, with the Trojans getting the better of the chances but Tartaglia denying them at every turn. They had to wait until under 2 minutes to go in the period to extend their lead again. Cory Adler forced his way to the near side of the net and sent a low shot on Tartaglia. The goalie made the initial save, but left a shallow rebound. Helmer jammed at it once before it came loose towards the far side post. Helmer backhanded it along the ice underneath a diving Tartaglia to renew a 3 goal lead. Then, right off of the faceoff, Helmer stole a puck off of a Bear forward's stick in the neutral zone, split the two defensemen, and came in on a short breakaway. He slid the puck low once again underneath Tartaglia's pad to give USC a 5-1 lead and Helmer a hat trick.

It's easy to say a 5-1 game in the third period is never in doubt, USC's play made a comeback for Cal impossible. Although the Trojans only goal came from a beautiful Alex Hite top shelf slapshot, they outshot Cal 22 - 5 in the third period and never took their foot off the gas. If Tartaglia had been even remotely off of his game, this would have gotten truly ugly. Either way, USC finished off a satisfying 6-1 win that appears to have gotten things back on track.

Some news/notes from the game:

- Nick Helmer has really been the man at forward for USC so far this season. He held the team lead in goals coming into the night, and increased that lead with his MVP performance. Helmer seems to have a nose for the back of the net. He gets his goals working down low, and he gets down low with his incredible stickhandling ability. Great night for him.

- That whole first line is looking great in general. They scored 4 out of the 6 Trojan goals tonight and are very much in sync with one another. If this line has an off night, then it will be a looooong game for USC...

- The performance of that first line is good to see, but there isn't a solid following act in that second line like in past seasons. The "Gold" line made little impact on the game, and had even less chemistry. Although Josh Frazier had a solid game, and Comisar was certainly robbed on a golden opportunity, Mitchell Landsinger had one of the sloppiest games I've seen from him in quite a while. He did great on faceoffs as always, but simply looked lost offensively. My guess is that this line will get much better with time.

- We finally saw the performance we were looking for from Zack Keith. He certainly wasn't perfect, suffering with his rebound control at times, but he looked more like a starting goaltender than I've seen him look all season. Next it will be Phil Adams' turn to make a similar statement against Oregon.

- Alex Hite has scored only two goals so far this season, but both have come against Cal on slapshots into the top corner of the net. He doesn't have the hardest slapshot on the team (that title belongs to Dante Caravaggio) but he is certainly accurate with it.

- This is the most talented fourth line I've seen on a Trojan team since I've been broadcasting. Scott Mason plays as well as anyone on the third line. Clark McClanathan has developed significant stick handling ability and would be a third liner on previous Trojan teams. James Anderson still needs to develop a little bit as a forward, but plays well with the other two. Coach Wilbur has never had a problem rolling all four lines, and this year should be no exception with this bunch.

- The shots were lopsided in this game. I shortchanged USC on air. They actually had 60 pucks on goal, while the Bears had a paltry 22.

- The next games against Oregon will be big measuring sticks to see where the chemistry and talent level is on this Trojan team at the moment. Tonight's game told us that USC is not bad. A sweep or split against the Ducks next weekend will show us that this team is good.

BREAKING UPDATE: USC vs. Stanford Cancelled

I'd hinted in last game's recap that the games this weekend might be cancelled.

It is official. No games this Friday or Saturday. According to Coach Wilbur, Stanford canceled the games. Not sure what the exact reason was.

But for anyone heading out this weekend to Anaheim Ice, just know that you'll be there to skate, not to see a hockey game!

Swept Out of Town: SJSU Cuts Down USC 10-2

It has been an undeniably brutal road trip this weekend in Northern California, and tonight was no exception. The Spartans were more than happy to sweep USC out of the door with another statement win, the Trojans' fourth consecutive loss. Here's some news/notes from the game:

- This was the strongest overall performance for the Trojans on this road trip, but that's not really saying much. Despite this, USC trailed 3-0 after 1 and 7-1 after 2.

- After the game, some of the Trojan players asked me what they were specifically doing wrong. They seemed at a loss for answers. My answer (and a lot of their's) was that San Jose State is simply the better team. The Spartans are a deep, fast, high chemistry team. Clark McClanathan speculated that the Trojans need to practice more together to get in sync.

- Granted, SJSU is the stronger team, but that doesn't mean the Trojans didn't make their share of mistakes. All too often USC, and especially USC defensemen, would simply pass the puck away to SJSU. Offensively, the Trojans simply didn't put enough shots on goal, and for the shots they did put on goal there was simply nobody parked in front to slam the puck home. The defense still played somewhat hesitant and not physical enough overall.

- Entering the night, Phil Adams had a shot to lock up the starter's job for good. Did he? Not quite. His performance was slightly more solid than Zack Keith's the previous night, and there were no specific "soft" goals Adams gave up. However, rebound control was a huge issue all night for Adams. On nearly every shot on Adams, he would give up a rebound. Some large, some small, but around 7 of the SJSU goals came off of those rebounds.

- Nick Helmer was the only member of the first line around, and did as much on his own as he could. His goal in the second period after Helmer moved all the way around the net, and back again before dishing it to Alex Hite. Off of Hite's shot, Helmer found the rebound and tucked it home.

- Clark McClanathan promised he would score his first goal of the season sometime this weekend. He made good on that promise in the third period. Breaking into the zone on a 3 on 1, McClanathan bumped into Szentveri and decided to keep the puck himself instead of dishing it. He found the back of the net with a wrist shot that glided along the surface of the ice seemingly underneath Caleb Murray's pads. Hard for Clark to celebrate because it cut the deficit to 7 goals at the time.

- Dante Caravaggio is lucky to escape the game in one piece. In the third period, Caravaggio sprawled out to break up an SJSU 2-on-1 and slid hard into the boards. He got up favoring one leg, but was back on the ice just a handful of minutes later. With just over two minutes left, the Spartans' captain Mickey Rhodes made a completely unnecessary and truly dirty play. Deep in the USC zone, Rhodes wrapped one arm around Caravaggio's shoulders, and took his leg and kicked one of Dante's legs out from underneath him. This penalty is known as slew-footing, the first time I've ever seen slew-footing called at a hockey game.

- Speaking of Rhodes, he set an "auspicious" SJSU record during the game, breaking the career penalty minutes mark with a double minor in the third period. The crowd went wild, giving Rhodes a standing ovation. Rhodes extended that record with the slew-footing major penalty and an additional game misconduct. That's an additional 15 penalty minutes on top of it. On the positive side, Rhodes also added 2 goals and an assist.

- 34 GOALS given up by USC in the Trojans' 3 games this weekend. I'll repeat that... 34 goals. Each of the three goalies gave up double digit goals this weekend.

- There was some discussion after the game about whether the Trojans are actually playing against Stanford next weekend at home or not. From what I could gather from team president Noah Comisar, there was a scheduling issue and the games may have been cancelled. I'll try and get an official word from Coach Wilbur this weekend.

No Excuses: Spartans Wreck the Trojans 12-2

After last night's no-fault nightmare, the Trojans have no excuses for their performance tonight. USC took the ice Friday night with a full complement of players, missing key first line forwards Cory Adler and Adam Zacuto, but dressing all 6 of their starting defensemen and 3 goaltenders. Unfortunately, San Jose State came with their full team as well.

Here's a breakdown of the game:

- While the Spartans dominated play throughout the night, the game did not look like it was heading for a 10 goal blow out after the first period. The Trojans trailed 2-0 heading into the intermission. USC did not look explosive per se, but the defense was active and broke up centering feed after centering feed and blocked plenty of shots.

- The Trojans had no answer for the Spartans first line all night. Combined, they scored half of San Jose State's goals. Captain Mickey Rhodes assisted on 6. Andy Dickerson and Sam Cimino each had a hat trick and a pair of assists. They played with incredible chemistry all night. The Spartans speed on that line and on their team overall killed USC.

- Meanwhile, USC showed absolutely no offensive chemistry. The first line was a patchwork combination of new and old Trojans with Landsinger, Helmer, and Frazier. That line looked like they were simply not on the same page all night. The second line of Comisar, Mach, and Ernst seemed to disappear into the background of the game. Only the Trojans' checking line of McClanathan, Szentveri, and Mason had any remote success.

-But the real problem for the Trojans came on the other end of the ice. While the Spartans choked off USC's offense in the neutral zone, the Trojan defense played hesitant, giving SJSU free entry into their territory. There was little physicality and the Spartans skated circles around USC. One of Cimino's goals came when he took the puck from behind USC's net and essentially walked into the low slot area.

- Goaltender Zack Keith had his second straight off game. To be fair, the majority of the goals were absolutely not Keith's fault, but several specific ones clearly were. Keith came out of the net to sweep away a puck from an oncoming Sam Cimino,. He badly misplayed the puck, Cimino scooped it up and fired it into the net. Later, a slapshot from the point made its way through Keith into the top corner without a screen in front. I hate say it because he's a fantastic guy, but the bottom line is that in Keith's two games starting, the Trojans are 0-2 and Keith's GAA (goals against average) is 9.

- Because of this, Phil Adams will have a chance to outright win the starter's role with another flashy performance in Saturday's game.

- The Trojans' two goals came from hard nosed plays in front. Scott Mason found a rebound off of a Matt Lewis shot and forced the puck in with SJSU goaltender Allesandro Mullane breathing down his neck. His first career goal as a Trojan. Pinching in from the point, Michael Gawlik found a rebound from a Max Szentveri attempt on goal.

- Joshua Frazier had a rough first game of his season. Just 20 seconds into the game, Frazier took a hooking penalty. During the second period, Frazier took a series of absolutely ridiculous hits. One of any of them would have been enough to shake up a player. He was hit five or more times with vicious check after vicious check. At least three of them happened on one ridiculous shift. To his credit, Frazier got up and continued skating after each hit, but man did he take some abuse.

- The penalty kill struggled for USC all night, allowing 4 powerplay goals.

- USC is now 1-3 overall and on a 3 game losing streak. Getting swept could be either incredibly demoralizing or a true wakeup call, but winning could be particularly difficult tomorrow.

"The I-5 Game" - Cal Crushes USC 12-1 Under Bizarre Circumstances

Hey everyone,

What a long, strange and outright insane night for USC. In lieu of a period by period recap, I'll provide the best account of the details leading up to tonight's unimaginable loss as I can.

- A semi-truck wrecked in the middle of I-5 near Grapevine (at the base of Tejon Pass) sometime around rush hour. It completely blocked traffic for nearly 3 hours before it could be cleared. Nearly every Trojan carpool leaving Los Angeles after 3 pm was helplessly stopped dead in their tracks.

- This compounded the problem of some USC players already leaving relatively late (4 pm) due to midterm exams.

- Remember how I said "nearly". The one saving grace that prevented a forfeit was that 6 players, both broadcasters, and both substitute coaches (read below) made it through to Oakland in time.

- The team was without Coach Wilbur, Coach Langille, or even Trainer Cindy Bailey. All three are attending Langille's wedding this weekend. They were replaced by Trojan alumni Ryan Seals and Ryan Farias.

- Those six players were defensemen Michael Gawlik, James Anderson, and Alex Hite; forwards Mitchell Landsinger and Max Ernst; and goaltender Adam Kwon.

- In order to give USC the most time possible to get as many players as possible to the game, Cal negotiated 20 minutes of delay with the arena to the already incredibly late 11:45 PM start. Technically, the puck was dropped to start play early Friday, not Thursday.

- Kwon got the start in net for USC by default. Sitting third on the depth chart, Kwon brings lots of energy and dedication to the ice, but unfortunately not a shred of game experience and only a 5'6" frame. To my knowledge, Kwon's start tonight was his first ever as a hockey goaltender.

- USC's locker room did their best to pump themselves up for the Herculean task at hand. There would be no forfeit, they would fight on...

- ...But the circumstances were far too much to overcome. The 6 Trojans played without a single sub for more than three-quarters of the first period. Kwon played valiantly, especially for a goaltender who had never played a game before, but the dam broke open quickly. Within the first 4 minutes it was 4-0. The Trojan defense and players looked to conserve as much energy as possible, but that gave an assassin-like Cal team even more opportunities to score from in front.

- As my broadcast partner, Mark Shore, pointed out, taking penalties in this situation has the big upside of allowing one of the players to rest for a little while. But this "strategy" turned out to not pan out. Cal went 4-5 on the man advantage in the game. When Alex Hite took USC's first penalty, he rested for 4 seconds before Cal scored.

- Hite himself scored his first career goal as a Trojan about halfway through the first. He fired a wicked slapshot from the blue line that found the far top corner of the net. Shore said it was the best slapshot he'd seen all season. I'd have to agree.

- But scoring didn't give him or any of the other 6 Trojans any rest. By the time Max Szentveri and Nate Neroni arrived with 4 minutes left in the first, it was 8-1 Cal. He played limited time after that point. Just at the end of the period, James Anderson took a slap shot off of his ankle and limped off of the ice.

- The Bears kept pushing, scoring two more to make it 10-1 after 1. With seconds left in the period, Dante Caravaggio, Clark McClanathan, and Noah Comisar arrived. Midway through the second period, Matt Lewis, Charlie Mach, Jason Bush, and Scott McDonagh showed up. Zack Keith arrived on the ice after the second intermission and replaced Kwon in net.

- The reinforcements stopped the bleeding, but not before Cal scored another powerplay goal seconds into the second period and added their 12th goal a few minutes later.

- USC regrouped on defense but couldn't find an offensive stroke. The Trojans were still missing their top 4 offensive weapons including the entire first line.

- This was a difficult situation for both teams, but both handled it admirably. For USC's part, the Trojans fought as hard as they could given the situation. The 6 Trojan players showed heart and determination by coming out of the locker room and even playing the game.

- For Cal's part, they played a difficult game with incredible class. It's impossible to expect the Bears wouldn't score in that situation. You can't let your team get into bad habits. But Cal coach Cyril Allen personally pushed back the start time as long as he possibly could. And not a single one of Cal's players showed up USC or celebrated after a goal. They played a hard, clean game, but showed incredible sportsmanship in victory.

- The lingering technicality is whether this lopsided score will be recorded as official. USC played two whole periods with no backup goaltender. The rulebook does state that each team must dress a backup goaltender or forfeit the game. If the score is ruled a forfeit, USC would only have been recorded as losing a 1-0 game.

- If the score is official, it is USC's biggest loss in Pac-8 play in team history.

Broken Brooms: Trojans Fall Short in 6-5 Loss

Hey everyone,

These post-loss recaps will be shorter in general. There may or may not be period recaps posted and occasionally won't audio highlights. Posting never seems quite as fun after a close loss like this one. It doesn't help that my vantage point was terrible (ice level, off of the corner), so I didn't see all of these plays as clearly as normal.

Period 1

The Trojans jumped out to a very quick start, scoring three unanswered goals and peppering starting Titans goaltender Alex Miller with shot after shot. Cory Adler got the first on the powerplay off of an Adam Zakuto rebound. Nick Helmer got the second off of an Adler rebound. Mitchell Landsinger got the third with a perfectly placed wrist shot. Fullerton responded with two unanswered of their own. Kyle Oyama had more success against starting netminder Zack Keith, finishing off a Chris Houlihan feed. Then Houlihan got his own goal from Oyama to trim USC's lead to 3-2. The Trojan powerplay stayed hot though. After Alex Hite held the blue line, he sent a rink wide point-to-point pass to Dante Caravaggio. The offensive defenseman wound up and ripped a blazing slapshot into the far top corner of the net. Four first period goals was all she wrote for Miller and he was replaced by Brandon Heethuis (pronounced heat-hoose).

Period 2

Then things got ugly for Keith and USC. This was truly a period to forget as the Titans scored 3 unanswered to take a 5-4 lead into the third. Keith looked shaky and didn't come up with any truly spectacular saves on the night as a whole.

Period 3

The third went a little better for the Trojans. Although the Titans extended their lead midway through the period with Payne Sauer's second goal of the night, USC had far more shots and scoring chances. Unlike the previous night, however, they couldn't seem to beat Heethuis for most of the period. With 3:24 left, The Trojans cut their deficit in half when Zakuto hopped on a puck near the far faceoff circle and slapped it past Heethuis. USC was buzzing following that goal, threatening to tie a few times, until Scott Mason's penalty with 2:03 left killed the Trojans' momentum. Helmer and Lewis each had shorthanded chances, but couldn't get the puck in and the Titans hung on for the win.

Some news and notes from the loss:

- Zack Keith may have seriously harmed his chances to be the guy to replace Matt Buttweiller. He was underwhelming in the loss, making few big saves and giving up a pair of easier goals. Compared side to side with Adams' performance the night before, Keith doesn't stack up. Adams faced more shots and more difficult shots, while giving up fewer goals. Coach Wilbur is unlikely to make a decision off of one bad night, so let's hope this is just that... a bad night.

- Some odd game management at the tail end of the game. Although USC was shorthanded, it controlled play in the Titans zone, and even with less than 30 seconds remaining, Keith never went to the bench for the extra skater. It wasn't like Keithe wasn't looking to the bench for the signal either. I'll try and ask Coach Wilbur about that decision before the next game.

- Penalties killed USC once again. Adam Zakuto and Mitchell Landsinger each took a double minor. Landsinger had 6 penalty minutes alone in the third period. The worst penalty though was Mason's hooking penalty to essentially kill off any chances at a comeback. Yes, the referee should be a touch more lenient in that situation, but Mason did get his stick in the midsection and you have to be more disciplined there. The Trojans in general have to be more disciplined, because they've traditionally ended up on the short end of calls in San Jose State away games.

- Here's a look at USC's goals per period so far.... First period: 6 goals scored, 2 against. Second period: 1 goal scored, 6 goals against. Third period: 4 goals scored, 2 goals against. Obviously the Trojans are starting well, but completely losing focus in the second period. Hopefully this doesn't become a trend.

- Something simultaneously positive and concerning is the offensive success of the first line... and lack of offensive success elsewhere. The first line has scored 7 of the Trojans' 11 goals so far this season. Each of the three members of that line had at least a goal and an assist tonight. However, the second line only has two goals so far, and one of those was incredibly fluky. The third line has another and the defense scored the 11th. USC needs more balance between the top two lines or else they could struggle to score as consistently as they need to.

- Some injuries to keep an eye on. Max Ernst tweaked his wrist before the game. He played through it, but it's something to watch. Nick Helmer also pulled his shoulder a bit during the first period, but stayed on the ice. That would be a major offensive loss.

Getting it Started Right: USC Wins Opener 6-4

Now that that's out of the way, on to the news, notes, and game recap.

Period 1

The Trojans kicked off the season right with an explosive first period. The completely rebuilt first line of Nick Helmer, Cory Adler, and Adam Zakuto was responsible for a lot of the Trojans' success. The first goal of the game came off of a beautiful feed from the goal line extended to the front of the net, Helmer to Zakuto. USC's first goal of the season was also Zakuto's first as a Trojan as well as Helmer's first point. Zakuto wasn't done just yet. He added another tally less than 4 minutes later with a beautiful redirection of defenseman Matt Lewis' shot from the point. Not wanting to be left off of the scoresheet, Cory Adler took a hooking call with 2 minutes left. However starting goaltender Phil Adams and the USC defense stopped the Titans' 5 on 3 aspirations and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Period 2

For whatever reason, USC decided to take a period off. The Titans Chris Houlihan ended Adams' shutout with a goal just more than 5 minutes in. Noah Comisar quickly re-extended USC's lead to two goals with a high effort, but relatively flukey unassisted goal. Houlihan answered back for CSUF, slipping in behind the USC defense, and sliding the puck through a crack of daylight between the post and Adams. Phil definitely wanted that one back. Although the Titans fell short on their first 5 powerplay opportunities, the made no mistakes with a sixth chance. This time it was Fullerton blueliner Payne Sauer burying a Houlihan rebound past a diving Adams. That tied things up 3-3. If this were the 2008-09 season, USC would've lost this game in heartbreaking fashion....

Period 3

But this is a new season, without the heartbreak this time. The Trojans came out of the locker room with a determination that's been missing for so long. Just 6 seconds into their second powerplay chance of the game, Adler won a draw to Helmer who forced his way to the net and slipped a puck past Brandon Heethuis. That momentum kept rolling. Minutes later, third line forward Max Szentveri gathered in a loose rebound from James Anderson's shot and found the back of the net to give USC a more comfortable margin. An Elan Dunaev goal brought the Titans within 1 again, but Adams and the Trojans held firm. With under two minutes to go, Nick Helmer finished off the Titans for good with a truly unassisted goal in which he: was tripped up, blanketed by defensemen, skated through all of them like pylons, and sending the puck into the bottom of the net. Simply incredible. The Titans kept pressing, but Adams held his ground and the Trojans finished off a tough 6-4 win.

Some notes from the game:
- The new additions for USC are really lighting things up. Every one of them seemed to make a contribution in some area of the ice. Nick Helmer had three points, including two clutch third period goals. Adam Zakuto chipped in two goals. Alex Hite made some incredible defensive plays, including completely shutting down a breakaway. Max Ernst made effort play after effort play. Scott Mason brought a nice physical edge to the ice as a forward. Adam Kwon gives USC the confidence of having a third goaltender. The new guys made some noise out there.

- Max Szentveri is far from a new guy, but I've simply never seen him play as well as he played tonight. He was a physical force, despite his relatively small stature, making one particularly jaw-dropping hit in the first period. He skated harder than I've seen him skate. He had 4 legitimate scoring chances and wasn't afraid to pull the trigger. His game-winning goal was the reward for a night of hard work. After the game he told me that he knew in the first period that he was going to score that night. Sensational game.

- Speaking about sensational games, Phil Adams announced himself as a legitimate heir to Buttweiler's throne. He made some ridiculous saves tonight. Adams was an artist with his glovework. On a breakaway in the second period, he denied Kyle Oyama by flashing the leather and snatching the puck away. In the third, Oyama had a rebound chance pop onto his stick, sent it towards the open side of the net, but Adams made a beautiful reflex save. He may not be the most technically sound netminder, but boy is he fun to watch and USC would've surely lost without him.

- Maybe it's a mark of the Mike Gawlik era, but one thing is for sure. Physicality is back in Trojan hockey. USC bullied CSUF with punishing hip checks and free trips into the boards. Everyone hit. Everyone played physical hockey. A possible reason for USC's third period success is that the Titans were tired.

- Cory Adler needs to play more disciplined hockey. The top line center had 12 penalty minutes during the games, and often took penalties at incredibly inopportune times.

- Despite being played on USC's home ice, Fullerton fans outnumbered the Trojan faithful 2 to 1.

- Rumor has it Alex Lofthus will not be playing for USC this season. The Ryder Fyrwald comeback may not amount to much either.

- Dante Caravaggio has a blazing slapshot, so it's not a surprise that he was the Trojan that fired the puck that hit me in the eye. I'm just glad it deflected a couple of times first.

Hey everyone,

Below are Coach Wilbur's expected line pairings and lineup for this week's series against Cal State Fullerton. There are some key names missing and this is all subject to change.

Forward Lines
Cardinal: Nick Helmer - Cory Adler - Adam Zacuto
Gold: Noah Comisar - Mitchell Landsinger - Max Ernst
Teal: Scott Mason - Charlie Mach - Max Szentveri
Green: Clark McClanathan - Vishal Gajendran - Alex Jurdi

Defense:
Michael Gawlik, Jason Bush, Matt Lewis, Dante Caravaggio, Alex Hite, James Anderson

Goalie:
Phil Adams, Zack Keith, Adam Kwon

Some interesting notes about this lineup:

- There are two new players on the top line. Freshman star Nick Helmer and Arizona transfer Adam Zacuto. Helmer has looked like a top line player all along, skating at a whole different speed during practices. I'm curious to see what he does in a game situation. I haven't seen as much from Zacuto, except for an absolutely ridiculous breakaway move that finished with the puck tucked just underneath the crossbar.
- Phil Adams was listed ahead of Zack Keith on the goaltending depth chart, and may end up the starter this weekend. However, the list also happened to be in alphabetical order, so we'll have to find out for sure later tonight.
- Josh Cerasuolo and Josh Frazier are listed as scratches for this weekend. Cerasuolo is out due to a fractured arm. I'm not positive on the exact reason why Frazier is out for this series.
- There were several prominent Trojans expected to be on this year's team that were not even listed on the full numbered roster or as scratches. Star junior Alex Lofthus is not in the list and his #12 was given to Josh Cerasuolo. Defenseman Alex Schauffhausen is not on the roster either. Finally, the anticipated return of Ryder Fyrwald may not happen after all as he is unlisted as well. However, Alex Jurdi and Vishal Gajendran are listed as playing, but weren't listed on the roster either. Tune into the game for more details on what all of their situations are.

Training Camp

Hey everyone!

Contrary to what I said in the last post I did attend training camp with USC down in Escondido this weekend. I scouted out the team from the ice itself, wearing jeans and borrowing a lefty stick. Here are a few notes/observations:
- Zach Keith is starting to find his groove. After a shaky tryouts, Keith shook off some of his rust and making his case to start.
- This year's freshman phenom? Without a doubt it is Nick Helmer out of Minnetonka, MN. He's a deft stick handler with a precision shot and a lot of speed. Expect big things.
- A potential factor for the semester ahead... A solid three or four Trojan players have a class ending at 6 pm on Fridays. This could make Friday home games particularly interesting roster-wise.
- Because of this wrinkle and heavy traffix, Friday's session had a relatively low attendance, while Saturday's was more like a traditional practice.
- I would have more notes from Saturday, except I spent most of the session in the hospital. During a passing/shooting drill I was positioned near the far corner in line with some of the players. A slapshot deflected off of the goalies stick, the crossbar and then hit me right below the eyebrow on my upper right eyelid. Without going into the gory details, a sizeable gash was opened up and my right eye swelled up somerhing awful. For a while I wasn't sure if I'd lost vision in that eye for good. Luckily I should make a full (albeit ugly) recovery. Maybe I should stick to the pressbox.....
- Special thanks to team trainer Cindy Bailey and former player Ryan Farias for their unbelievable help.

Tryouts

Hey everyone!

The season is almost here and the team is starting to come together. Last night, Coach Wilbur ran the second night of tryouts out in Anaheim Ice.

Here are some news and notes:
- This is a stacked team offensively. Besides Michael Joyce and Tyler McLinn, everyone is back and then some. Ryder Fyrwald, USC's 2007 offensive star, has rejoined the team after a year off. Some new potential stars entering the mix should also improve the Trojans' goalscoring.
- One new star is a transfer from Arizona's ACHA Division 1 program. The last name is escaping me, but the first name is Zach (I was too busy filming...). He scored the goal of the night on a breakaway. He toe dragged right, before clanging the puck off of the joint between crossbar and post and into the net. Wilbur's jaw dropped.
- Captain Michael Gawlik made his presence felt. He smashed two of his teammates into the boards. This should be a much more physical team with Gawlik at the helm, something that was sorely missing a season ago.
- The biggest question remains the goaltending. Netminders Phil Adams and Zach Keith are battling for the starting slot, but both looked fairly rusty. We'll see who gets the ultimate call to replace Buttweiller and how they'll handle it.
- Some injury news. Josh Cerrasuolo fractured his arm on Monday and will be out 8-12 weeks. Jay Roth did not practice due to a foot injury. Nate Neroni may have also tweaked his wrist during the night's tryouts.

2008-09 Season Top 5 Audio Highlights

As we get closer and closer to next season, I thought it would be important to look back at the season now in the rear-view mirror. It also gives me a chance to demonstrate the new audio highlights system this blog will incorporate. If you hadn't figured it out already, you can hit the play button and listen along. Here are the 5 plays (they're sort of, but not really, in chronological order):

1) Michael Nijjar's Statement Game

The Trojans were playing Game 2 of their weekender series against Stanford. Michael Nijjar was just getting reinstated after questions surrounding his eligibility kept him out of numerous games for USC. The Cardinal shocked the Pac-8 by winning Game 1 6-5 on Joe Ulerich's back, but Nijjar made sure there was no way the Trojans were going home swept. Michael finished off a hat trick in the third period off a sweet feed from Alex Lofthus.

2) Dante Caravaggio Puts Long Beach to Bed

It was a late October night, and the Trojans were trying to deal with the always pesky Long Beach State 49ers on Anaheim Ice. There was one problem. The 49ers wouldn't go to bed on their own accord. They scored with less than a minute remaining to tie the game and extend their bedtime. Less than halfway into overtime though, blueliner Dante Caravaggio put the 49ers to rest. He fired a rocket off of a faceoff win in LBSU territory that ripped past Ricky St. Louis and into the net. Good night, game over.

3) Clark McClanathan Slays the Dragons

This was the most ridiculous, over-the-top goal call I've ever made. Midway through the third game of the China road swing, on Thanksgiving, Clark McClanathan entered the Beijing Dragons' zone one-on-one close to the near-side boards. Instead of going closer to the boards or towards the center of the ice with the puck, Clark went straight at the Dragons defender. He put the puck between the defenseman's legs, scooped it up on the other side before beating the goalie with a quick wrist shot. It was his second goal of the season from a move I expect more from a Michael Joyce or an Alex Lofthus, not Clark McClanathan. Add that to the fact that Clark is one of the team's best locker room guys and one of my favorite players, and I just flipped out. No it wasn't the "prettiest goal you'll ever see", but I still liked it just fine.

4) Matt Buttweiler = Access Denied

It's Game 1 of a two-game series right before the Pac-8 tournament, and Matt Buttweiler has a problem. Dante Caravaggio has turned the puck over to Robbie Vaughn, and Vaughn is coming in a hurry. Vaughn thinks he sees an opening, but Buttweiler and his left pad have other plans. Vaughn gets robbed, and within a few minutes, the Trojan first line scores a goal on the other end of the ice. USC may have lost that game and the series, but nobody could point the finger at Buttweiler after his performance.

5) Joe Scialfa Goes Out On Top

Flashback three seasons ago. UCLA is hosting the Pac-8 Championships in 2007. The final game is USC vs. Oregon with the Trojans looking for a second straight Pac-8 title. Less than a minute left in overtime, fourth liner Jay McKee finds a loose puck near the blue line spins around and launches it towards net. The puck may have hit Jason Filantres in front (but I don't think it did). Either way, USC wins their second consecutive title off the stick of a little used fourth line player. Joe Scialfa's goal wasn't as fluky or as important, but it did shut the door on the Cougars and the season and allowed the fourth line senior to finish his brief USC career with a flourish.

For anyone directed to this page from wherever, let me welcome you to the USC Ice Hockey Blog. My name is Alex Goldsmith, and I'm entering my 4th season as a broadcaster for USC Ice Hockey! Glad you found your way to this space.

This blog was initially created back in 2007 by former broadcaster Dave Foley. It's initial purpose was to cover two games on the road against SJSU when we had broadcasting trouble. Following that, it was briefly used to recap games. That function then moved over to the USC Ice Hockey Message Boards (you can find the link at www.uscicehockey.com). That left this blog dead, and sadly unused. But no more! Coming next season in the fall, this blog will find new life.

Here are some things you can expect to find on the up and coming USC Ice Hockey blog (no promises or guarantees):

- Game recaps
- Audio highlights
- Player/coach interviews
- Photographs (when available)
- Coverage of the 2010 Pac-8 Championship Tournament (hosted by USC!)

Over the next couple of months you'll see tweaks on this website as it gets ready for the fall. Expect to see new content starting in mid-to-late September as the Trojans enter training camp and tryouts for the new season.
